Apps, Bitcoin Wallets & Decentralisation

A long one on the blog this week as I finally make the long-overdue jump to Android and ponder the more general shift to mobile in light of the recent debate about the state of the mobile web.
As the majority of US internet access is now on mobile, does the growing use of apps instead of the mobile web prevent the free flow of information?

I'm not sure my stomach realises that I'm just watching this on a big screen as opposed to jumping off the top of a waterfall...

Intrigued to see comments from those far more tech-savvy than me on how useful Hack might be for smaller teams.

Thanks for the link +James Baster. As with many things, it seems to be critical mass will decide its long-term success (usage) or otherwise. As Marco says, it clearly solves a big problem for Facebook which is huge enough to reap significant rewards from adoption - but FB certainly won't be around forever. I like Marco's point about the early days of a language tending to include higher quality code due to the talent of the initial adopters - hadn't really thought of it that way before.

As the pace of technology development speeds up, issues relating to security and identity are raising more questions than ever before. I've put a few thoughts on my blog today.

Let me know if you've got any thoughts!

I'm surprised at how many think that having real time data provided via wearables could be in some way a bad idea. That proportion has to shift surely once people start to see valuable implementations of the technology in practice that make everyday life easier.

Looks like a great event - shame I'll not be in Edinburgh for it.

RSVP Here: http://goo.gl/grtBrS

3,2,1… lift-off! We’re spreading the word about Edinburgh’s #CityExperts with a special space themed night that’s out of this world.

Join us for astronaut training (including trying on a spacesuit), exploring the solar system in a portable planetarium, and even launching your own rocket. There’ll be vintage sci-fi films, a spacetacular DJ, roving scientists doing mind-boggling experiments… and so much more.

All while enjoying food fit for orbit (like liquid nitrogen ice-cream), space-themed cocktails and exclusive Science Festival beer too.

To attend, all you have to do is RSVP (http://goo.gl/grtBrS) and sign up for Edinburgh’s City Experts: g.co/cityexperts. The deadline to RSVP is Wed 9th April. If you made it onto the list, we’ll send you an email confirmation on Thurs 10th April.

Standing Ovation For A Robot?

It'll be fascinating to see how long it takes for this prize to be won.

How do you feel about a vehicle driving around and taking photographs of every single car registration plate that it passes? How about if such snapshots that prove the precise location of millions of individuals at specific times are now being sold to anyone who wants it - including private detectives and insurance companies?

In summary: mistake in Apple code was possibly created - or at least exploited - by NSA before Apple were aware. Either way, this is a huge security flaw - and it's been there since 2012.

tl;dr if you have an iPhone and haven't yet updated iOS, do it asap

Digging into the intersection of creativity, knowledge and business
Introduction
I am passionate about entrepreneurship, disruptive technologies, the commercialisation of creative content and the potential for online collaboration to act as a conduit for the advancement of human knowledge - in essence: making things simpler, more relevant and, ultimately, more valuable.

After a career helping startups, entrepreneurs and investors across the UK, I completed an MBA before leaving the law to work with a range of businesses in developing powerful digital strategies.

As a consultant, my focus is first on helping management teams to understand how to leverage and adapt business models to gain competitive advantage in a modern digital environment.

I'm currently based in Edinburgh and now working exclusively with Skyscanner, the world's fastest-growing travel search company.
