I continue to receive a plethora of messages and questions from members of the Grain Brain community looking to find out if a particular gluten-free product is acceptable on the Grain Brain program. These products come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but some of the most common are the “gluten-free” breads, pastas, cookies, […]

I recently had the great honor to lecture in California along side Dr. Alessio Fasano. Dr. Fasano is a practicing gastroenterologist and research scientist at Harvard whose interest is in gluten-related disorders like gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy and celiac disease. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Scientific American, The Wall Street […]

Hi David Perlmutter, M.D. I saw you on Dr. Oz today, July 30, 2014. I am very excited about how you may help me.  I had back surgery; which left me with "CAUDA EQUINA SYNDRONE". I request your help.  I am OVER MEDICATED!  Taking meds for nerve damages to the nerve which controls the bladder and rectum. Also taking meds for pain (which constipates), spasms and for my mental status as well (I AM ALWAYS IN PAIN). I am seeing every kind of specialist from neurologist, urologist, psychiatrist to pain psychiatrist (just to name a few) and I am so tired. I have my good days as well as my not so good days.  I  am not able to use my bladder nor empty my bowel on my own. I use catheters every time I need to urinate, having to consume lots of fiber and drink excessive water just to have a semi-normal bowel movement.  Plus having to strain; even when having diarrhea stooling and doing impactions as well. I have numbness in my lower extremities which always feel as if I am constantly wearing a pad and is very annoying and painful. I feel so insecure when I'm out and about!  I really would love to have the opportunity to meet you as well as helping me find the right solution. Right now, doctors are wanting to place a pacemaker (stimulator) wired in my spine to control the damaged nerves and allow me to release waste and treat my pain meds and injections.  I would love to explore natural remedies of which you spoke of on Dr. Oz's show to see if it's the answer for me.  I DO NOT WANT TO LIVE LIKE THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!
I REALLY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU!!
Thank you for your time

Growth hormone for the brain. What a concept. Truth is, science has indeed identified a protein that does exactly that. It’s called brain-derived neurotrophic hormone (BDNF). While this may sound compelling in name and implication, let’s take a step back and look at what the science tells us about this incredibly important actor in brain […]

After 20 years, the FDA has plans for a major overhaul of the Nutrition Facts label. This is a big deal, as the sticker is required on the majority of American packaged foods. In reality, the Nutrition Facts label represents one of the best sources of information on our groceries. The FDA claims its changes […]

I think people should learn how to adequately read and interpret food labels, it's a big task. Another way, is to customize ES to whatever you don't want in your diet, then scan any bar code. It won't miss anything you plugged in. www.eatsmartapp.com.

As fate would have it, one of the most important chemicals in human physiology to sustain life is cholesterol. Yes, this is the same cholesterol that has been so vilified.

Your brain contains as many as 100 billion neurons and the health, vitality, and functionality of each brain cell is intimately influenced by BDNF.

Tomorrow (Thursday, May 8th) on the Dr. Oz Show, I’ll be discussing the very real threat that gluten poses to brain health and function. I’m actually going to bring along a patient whose life was pretty much destroyed by a devastating movement disorder that involved her face. Tune in to watch what happened to her when she […]

By: Austin Perlmutter, Medical Student, Miller School of Medicine Depression is the leading cause of disability in young Americans, a significant burden for those affected and those around them. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a round table discussion focused on the topic of statin medications used to lower cholesterol. As many of you are now aware, a new set of “guidelines” developed by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology was recently issued instructing healthcare practitioners as to when […]

I have posted several blogs relating the fundamental role of inflammation to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Indeed, this is one of the central themes of Grain Brain. That said, we’ve also got to take a look at the role of inflammation in the developing brain because the same damaging effects of the chemical […]
