"You see it with sport. People get cast in a certain role: he's this type of player, and then when something contradictory happens they can't accept the contradiction, so they have to create a new narrative. We're on the fifth or sixth narrative of me in public life - I was a tyrant, I wouldn't let my bandmates play on the album blah blah blah blah blah. No amount of me explaining that ever changes it, the only way I can change it is if I keep trumping the creation..."

Smashing Pumpkins' frontman is in fighting form, rallying against his detractors. And with good reason.

DiS caught up with Idlewild to learn more about their fantastic 8th album Everything Ever Written http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4148584-scotch-broth--idlewild-discuss-everything-ever-written

Marc Burrows writes:  2015 see’s a new Idlewild album, Everything Ever Written a record which is, genuinely, hand on heart, one of the best things they’ve ever done... The sessions started to produce music that differed markedly from the full-throttle rock of the last two Idlewild albums, or their big turn-of-the-millenium hits. “[Bob Dylan’s] The Basement Tapes was a big inspiration for me on this record, in that I didn’t want anything lyrically and vocally, to sound too laboured over, I wanted a freshness to it.” Says Woomble. That’s not to say there wasn’t a certain Idlewildyness to proceedings, “It still sounds like Idlewild.” says Jones “We’ve got a sound, and I don’t think individually any of us know why that is, but when we’re all making records together we do have a sound, we have a sonic landscape. We’re all on the same page. A mixture of the three, certainly with me, Roddy and Colin, when you put the three together, the way I play guitar, the way Colin plays drums, none of us do anything in the traditional sense, we’re all kind of self-taught and learned our own way, as most of the bands we loved did.”

One for the gear geeks...

Jack: I would say my recording technique is defined by laziness. I record as little as possible and spend most of time chopping things up and manipulating the samples on the computer. I recycle sounds hundreds of times. I have one shaker loop, one tambourine loop and one crash cymbal which I use in most of my projects. I have very few plugins, having spent a lot of time choosing my favourite one for each purpose and sticking with it. The less time spent deciding on a specific reverb plugin for that very subtle Fender Rhodes overdub, the better.

Leave 'Mr Tembo' Alone
Damon Albarn can write a song about a baby elephant if he wants to. There, I said it: Weirdly it’s a controversial opinion round these parts. We’re talking –of course- about ‘Mr Tembo,’ the lightest moment on Albarn’s Mercury-nominated “debut solo album” (two of those three words are debatable, but we’ll come to that later) Everyday Robots, dubbed by one DiS boarder as “that appalling elephant song”, and “the worst, most cringe-worthily embarrassing song ever recorded by anyone ever.” It seems a bit unfair- it’s not even the most cringe-worthily embarrassing thing Damon Albarn has recorded (Blur’s version of ‘Oliver’s Army’ is so bad Alex James, of all people, actually refused to play on it. And he wrote that Wigwam song.) This is a man that spent a decade pretending to be four cartoon characters (and then he formed Gorrilaz. AM I RIGHT GUYS…guys? Is this thing on?) and whose best song is about a handkerchief: on the Albarn-scale of ridiculous ‘Mr Tembo’ barely scratches the surface. And you know what? It’s completely charming, a moment of genuine lightness on a record that spends a lot of its time in a fairly dark place, dwelling on past regrets while simultaneously mourning a Britain/life/man that is receding into the distant past, replaced by world of mobile phones, second-hand contact and apparent soulessness.

At its heart it’s an examination of the receding of nature of both community and hairlines; a record only a man in his 40s can make, about detachment and despair. So if he wants to write a song about a baby elephant struggling to get up a hill in order to lighten the mood let’s bloody well let him.
