Here’s How to Properly Get Rid of Old Medicines

Do you also pour old and expired medicines down the drain or toilet? Many people tend to wash away their medicines in running water, harming animals, and other people. But it’s not advisable to throw pills and containers into the trash either. They might fall into the hands of little kids and pets and mistake them for treats.

The golden rule of disposing medicines is this: Destroy those prescriptions before tossing them in the garbage bin.

Here’s how you can do it:

- Put old medicines in a plastic bag. Take all pills and capsules from their containers and lock them tightly in a plastic bag. It’s okay to mix different kinds of medicines for disposal.

- Destroy them. Dissolve these medicines with the help of a small amount of water. Put something that’s not food – sawdust, dirt, soil, kitty litter, paper stacks – into the solution. This puts off kids or animals from discovering the prescription mix and avoids consuming it.

- Seal the bag. Make sure it’s tightly closed so it won’t spill as you throw it in the trash.

- Take off the label. Your container pills may have private medical information, so remove it carefully before tossing them in the trash. If the label is attached firmly to the container and taking them off seems impossible, black out all pertinent information using a black marker instead.

Check with your pharmacy for any medicine “take-back” service. This makes getting rid of old prescriptions easier for you.

4 Ways to Order Your Prescription Refills

So, you went to see a doctor to check on your discomfort and you came home with a prescription in hand. But when you read it, your doctor included “refills” on their instruction.

Look closely – Is there a number beside the “refills” section? This figure indicates how many times you can obtain your prescriptions without the added hassle of visiting back your physician.

Here are ways to how you can get your prescription refills:

1.PERSONALLY. If you have enough time, visit your pharmacy personally to have your refills. It’s best to stick to only one pharmacy as this makes refill and other service transactions easier. Wait for your prescription to be dispensed or pick it at a later time. However, if your packed schedule makes it impossible to drop by your pharmacy, below are other alternatives for you.

2.PHARMACY APP. Large companies have downloadable smartphone apps that can make your refill much easier. Check with your pharmacy if they have an app for your convenience.

3.PHARMACY WEBSITE. Another convenient method is by reordering your prescriptions online. Just follow the instructions presented on your pharmacy’s website.

4.THROUGH PHONE. Contact your pharmacy to call for your refill. Some pharmacies have voice prompt services that can guide you through the process. Other apothecaries may give you the chance to speak with a pharmacist directly.
