In response to seeing this face recognition illusion (thanks +Zak Stone
), I wanted to see a similar experiment with word/letter recognition. In the linked gif (actually click the gif so that it animates), there are a series of two strings displayed. One of them is a randomly selected English word, the other is a random set of consonants. Both strings are 8 characters long, and displayed in a mono-spaced font. After being displayed momentarily in black, the English word is highlighted in red. There are 100 total tests. Focus on the X in the middle the entire time, and try to guess which word is the actual English word, before it turns red. I was able to almost perfectly predict which was the real word, without actually being able to read the word, or even consciously identify a single letter.
