My WeMo Review:
So while I had myself quarantined away this week/weekend while I was sick, I went ahead and installed some WeMo switches that I picked up at a hefty discount during a radio shack store closing sale. WeMo for those who are unfamiliar let's you control and monitor devices (outlets , switches , sensors and cameras) with your Android or Apple devices when at home or while away.
While this was my first go around with light switches and home electrical wiring, I seemed to manage OK. The only thing that made it difficult was that the WeMo switch is not compatible with the 3 way switches/wiring I currently had in place. What I ended up doing is capping off one of the load/switch wires that goes to the source switch. This let's me keep both switches but if the source switch is off, so is the WeMo.
Anyhow the switches are pretty cool and there is nothing more satisfying than sitting down to watch a movie and turning the lights off with your tablet or smart phone. That being said, while the application does allow for some away and scheduling features it can be a little buggy and has some room for feature improvements.
Overall I'd give Belkin's Wemo products I have here a 4 out of 5 for any do it your self / budget minded / home automation enthusiasts interested in checking them out. The WeMo devices and application in combination with IFTTT (If This Then That) app could very well push WeMo to the 5 star category but I'd rather have these features already built in. #Wemo #HomeAutomation #Belkin
