Drawpile version 2.0.0 beta 2 is finally out!

With the second beta, the 2.0 final release in nearing completion. Just a few more features to add and bugs to squash.

Key features in this release include:

* Automatic session resetting when space is low
* Sessions no longer terminate when they run out of space
* Many improvements to the server, including a graphical mode (still a work in progress.)
* Users can now be banned from individual sessions
* All session settings can now be changed from the GUI

And of course lots of bug fixes.

Please give the new version a try and report any bugs you may find! There will be at least one more beta that will add the missing features, followed by a release candidate before the final 2.0.0 version.

Drawpile 1.0.5 is now out!
This is release contains just a couple of bugfixes, but they are important enough to warrant a new version before the next 2.0 beta.

This release contains two Mac specific bugfixes and another two that affect all platforms:

* A performance related fix that might help if Drawpile is locking up when joining an existing session.
* Eraser hard edge mode is now restored correctly when switching tools

Did that. We get the same error, no access from either end. The firewalls have the access granted, on her end and on mine. I can connect to other servers, no problem. It is still not working. I first thought it was due to international facts, yet if it were so, I couldn't connect to another server.

I just added a new help page: tips on how to use Drawpile's session moderation features.
Tips for session moderation. When hosting a session that is open for random users, the threat of griefers coming in and making a mess of everyone's work is very real. While there is no technical solution to completely fix this problem, Drawpile does have some tools that help.

Here's a little preview of the new playback dialog in the upcoming 2.0 version. The dialog shed some features, but I think the new thumbnail strip more than makes up for it, since it now actually shows something useful!

The 2.0 branch is shaping up nicely and will be ready for the first beta release very soon. There are still a few bugs I know about that I want to fix first.

In other news, if your cursor does not move when hovering the tablet stylus, it seems to be caused by a bug in the new Qt version. Right now, tablet hovering is broken in every Qt based application on my desktop, except for Krita which uses its own tablet code. (It seems like every new Qt release randomly fixes some tablet bug on some platforms, but also introduces a bunch of new ones in its place.) A workaround that lets you at least see your cursor is to enable the crosshair cursor via the View menu.

If you're running the OSX version and find your customized palettes missing or get a certificate error when connecting to the public server, try the new 1.0.4-2 version, now available for download. This is an OSX specific mini update that fixes these two bugs.

Double release today: Versions 1.0.4 and 2.0.0 beta 1 are out!

Version 2.0 beta is released alongside the stable release, as it is incompatible with 1.x series versions. Please try out the 2.0 and report any regressions you might find!

Version 2.0 introduces many changes, most of which are behind the scenes. The most visible new features are:

A minor milestone: Canvas, tool and network code are now completely separated from the user interface code. This means it is now possible to write alternative UIs that leverage the same engine as the current widget based UI.

I had planned for version 2.0 to be partially based on Qt Quick, but due to reasons I've written about before, that turned out to be easier said than done. Now instead I'm planning on returning to pure widgets for the desktop version and creating a new entirely Qt Quick based mobile version. With the engine separated from the UI, most of the code can still be shared between the two versions.

Version 2.0 status update: The master development branch has languished for a long time, in part due to a specific feature (multithreaded canvas) not working quite right and giving me coder's block. I just reverted the whole thing and merged in all the updates from the stable branch.

I think there are plenty enough changes in the development branch that I'll concentrate next on just fixing it up so I can make the 2.0 beta release. I'll continue work on new features after 2.0 has stabilized enough to become the new default.

Now for the first time with a prebuilt Linux version as well!
Afer a long wait, Drawpile 1.0.3 is finally ready! As a stable branch release, this version is fully compatible with all 1.0.x versions, including future ones. Although this is a bugfix focused release, two interesting new features are introduced: Session templates allow you to prepopulate a ...

AppImages bundle all the libraries, including Qt, which means the application will always use the bundled style (in this case, Qt's Fusion widget style) rather than one from the system. I don't know if any workaround to this problem exists.
