Meet an “Amazing” Swift With Racquet and Ball

Bill Guilfoil, 94, has been playing table-tennis, aka “ping-pong” since the 1930s. He was 13 at the time, and practiced hitting against a wall at home, which he says took him almost to the Nationals Championship. Although he didn’t make the Olympic team going to the 2016 Rio Games, Bill did try out for it, proving that there’s no stopping someone with a passion, regardless of age. Bill plays, competes, and coaches table-tennis at his local Racquet Club, where he enjoys meeting people from all walks of life. He’s always interested in new things, and works on improving himself physically and mentally, in all situations. A true “Amazing!”

What if you had the courage to see that your way isn’t the only “right” way, that there are as many ways to live a fulfilling life as there are individuals striving to do so? What if you stopped trying to change your friends and loved ones, or control their behavior, not out of “Fine! Do it your way!” but out of love, out of respect for their right to make their own choices. Out of your courageous heart.

Courage. A small word – seven letters. A powerful word, because it takes all your heart, to be courageous.

Try it. Make this your year of Courage, and watch your life transform.

Meet an “Amazing” With Tap-Tap-Tap-Dancin’ Feet

Doris Humphries, 92, not only has been dancing since she was eleven years old, she introduced the Arthur Murray style of ballroom dancing to the South Side of Chicago – after she’d retired from the stage and raised her children! As a professional dancer back in the ‘30s and ‘40s, she and a partner, the two were known as “Tonya and Tanya,” were an interracial dance pair – something very rare at the time – who performed dances that combined Latin and soul. Her ballroom instructing days morphed into other forms of dance, and today she teaches tap-dancing in Chicago. She still performs as well, her most recent stage appearance being in a show called (appropriately!) “On Broadway” in 2017. Dancing is her love, her passion, and her mantra; in her words “As long as God says OK, I’m going on!”

Meet an “Amazing” Who Proves You’re Never Too Old to Try Something New

Alexander Beernink, 73, fell in love with gymnastics when he was all of three mighty years old, but never pursued it until at age 60, he decided “It’s now or never”! Now, indeed! Alexander just competed in the Australian Masters Games in Burnie, his seventh Master Game in a row, and is looking forward to many more such competitions. What does he like best about gymnastics? In addition to the sport itself, he loves the camaraderie, the people he meets and the friendships made along the way. Way to go, Alexander!

Meet an “Amazing” Whose Love of Outer Space Continues Ever Onward

Nichelle Nichols, 85, isn’t just the pretty face of Lieutenant Uhura on the USS
Enterprise in “Star Trek.” She is a devotee of the exploration of outer space both in the world of entertainment and in the real world. Nichelle became a volunteer with a special NASA project whose purpose was to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency. Her impact as a role model has been noted by such worthies as Dr.Martin Luther King and Whoopi Goldberg.

In addition to her ongoing work as an actress, since the mid-1980s, Nichelle has served on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society, a nonprofit, educational space advocacy organization founded by Dr. Wernher von Braun--all this after a first career as a singer with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton! Talent and a dedication to service in one astonishing package!

Why is it when a casual friend criticizes your hair, your outfit, or what you do for a living, does it hurt? Why does the opinion of someone you hardly even know, much less care about, matter so much?

Because you're forgetting – you have the right to your preferences – as other people do to theirs. When you try to live your life so as to make other people happy – you're not living your life anymore at all. You're living someone else's version of your life, and that never works, because what one person will approve of, another person is bound not to like.

So, instead, develop confidence in your choices, in what pleases you. Stand up for what you like, and when someone puts down your choice or criticizes it, just smile and say: "Isn't great we all have such different tastes. The world would be very boring if we all liked the same thing," and go about your day – still happy.

Meet an “Amazing” Who’s Found His New Calling as a “Baby Buddy”

David Deutchman, 82, happened to walk in to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta after he left a rehab session for a leg injury, and asked if they had volunteer opportunities. That was 12 years ago. Since then, much to the delight of hospital staff, David has spent two days a week--year in, year out--in the pediatric and neonatal ICUs, holding babies and helping parents however he can. Quite a switch from his career in international business that he retired from in 2000, followed by teaching stints as a guest lecturer at various universities. Best of all, David says being puked and peed on hasn’t diminished his enthusiasm one iota for these tiny beings so in need of human warmth and affection.
