Binge Eating Disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States. Everyone will binge on food at some point in their lifetime but Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is not just a casual "greed fest". Unfortunately the American food supply sets us all up for binge eating because our food supply is intentionally laced with excess sugar, chemicals that turn on the brain's reward system and cause addiction, and intense flavors that are usually not found in nature. There are several criteria for Binge Eating Disorder but to name a few, BED involves eating very large amounts of food quickly, eating in secret due to embarrassment, and eating in a short defined window of time until uncomfortably stuffed and full. BED patients often feel compulsive, out of control, guilty, and alone. To meet criteria for BED, binge eating must take place at least once a week for a consistent period of at least 3 months. In medical weight management we pride ourselves on not only treating but diagnosing the underlying causes of excess weight. The best treatment is intense psychotherapy with a psychologist specifically trained in eating disorders. This relates to almost every area in health and wellness. Often the thing that will produce our true healing is also the the 1 thing that we are avoiding the most. For me this was cutting out sugar. I could not imagine a day without dessert. For others it is avoiding the gym or making necessary dietary changes. What is the 1 thing that you are avoiding? Are you delaying your healing?
