Most people don't know this. In my case I am a Board Certified Chiropractic Internist. I spent 3 years studying Internal Medicine and took 3 extensive board exams, including a practical exam. Thats where my DABCI credentials come from.

Think about how true this is for the heart? What about if you are symptomatic from kidney disease one day, it didn't just happen then. The same thing for neck and back problems. A periodic check up can prevent back attacks!

INFORMATION REGARDING CAR ACCIDENTS! - please take time to read this...
I have been treating patients injured in car accidents for 30 years now. Often times people would wait to see "how they felt" after an accident before seeking care. They think the pain will go away, they don't think they can afford care, they don't have the time. Sometimes an injured person thinks they need to see an attorney first.
I get it, I was in a car accident and it was a pain to go for care as I run a full time practice, but deep down I knew I had to go to get my health back. At first I had a sore neck but after 2 month care we ran an MRI to find out I had a herniated disc in my neck. This injury took time to heal and at times still acts up, but I can control it with chiropractic care. So, here are some important things to know:
First, if you drive a car in Florida it is the law that you carry PIP ( Personal Injury Protection ) insurance. This is insurance that covers YOU for medical care due to a car accident, it doesn't matter who caused the accident. Your PIP covers you, your passenger's insurance covers him or her. We live in a " No Fault" state, our own insurance covers us. Sometimes it doesn't seem fair, like if you are hit from behind while at a red light, but thats how it is. PIP benefits are usually $10,000.00 coverage, check your policy. It is always a good idea in Florida to carry UM = Uninsured Motorist coverage as many people don't have liability coverage, which does cover you in case you go through your benefits while treating.
Second, by law you have 14 days after an accident to seek medical care or you FORFEIT your PIP benefits. It is important to contact any licensed healthcare provider. It can by a chiropractor like me, a walk in clinic, your family doctor ( though most don't handle accident cases ). You can also go to the local ER, but I recommend doing so mainly if you hit your head, lost consciousness, have a cut or open wound, are dizzy or light headed, or the pain is so severe you feel the need to get immediate attention. The costs to going to the ER can wipe out your PIP benefits and leave no money for treatment after, but if you have to go, you have to go...
Third, delaying treatment can lead to the body producing scar tissue in the muscles and ligaments of the neck that can delay or restrict proper and full recovery. It also delays getting relief from pain. You cant wish pain away.
Lastly, while at times an attorney may be needed if there is a permanency to the injury or the insurance company is not doing what they should, it is more important to SEEK CARE FIRST. This is your health we are talking about! Treating an auto accident case is much more than just rendering care. First off an injured patient needs a thorough exam and usually some diagnostic imaging to find out the true extent of the injury. The exam in the ER is geared more to life threatening injuries or broken bones, they don't usually do a comprehensive orthopedic/neurologic assessment. Often if they don't see a broken bone, they send you off with medications and tell you to see your family doctor, who doesn't treat accident victims. A thorough comprehensive exam needs to be done so that appropriate care is rendered and time is not wasted on ineffective treatment. Second, this all needs to be THOROUGHLY documented. There's an old saying in healthcare... "if it isn't written, it didn't happen". In accident cases that may involve the legal system proper documentation is very important. Third, with a thorough work up and proper diagnosis you can receive the proper effective care to start the healing process right away, not wasting time on ineffective treatment.
Below is a good article on whiplash injuries to the neck after a car accident. Please TAKE TIME TO READ IT. People in an accident, it's important to get an assessment, even if right away you think it's " not that bad ". I have seen people have accidents and the pain start or really worsen 3-4 weeks after the trauma. If a person doesn't get an evaluation within 14 days, they won't have PIP benefits that can cover them.
