Faces of Cardiff Bay

I was lucky enough to shoot this amazing sunset on Tuesday night in Cardiff Bay, only 5 minutes walk from my flat. The modern building on the right is the Senedd, home to the National Assembly of Wales; the red-brick building in the centre of the frame is the Pierhead Building, built in 1897 as the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company but now a visitor and education centre for the National Assembly; and finally, on the left, is the Merchant Seafarers' War Memorial - a sculpture by Brian Fell which appears as a human face one side and the framework of a ship on the other.

In terms of processing, this is a HDR made from five exposures, merged to a 32-bit TIFF in +Adobe Photoshop and then tone mapped in +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Further targeted adjustments were then made in Photoshop using luminosity masks to give a greater degree of control.

Prints of most of my photographs can be purchased at www.douglaspenman.com

Tredegar Wedding Feast

I mentioned previously that I had visited Tredegar House recently, and here is another shot that I took there. This is the Brown Dining Room, with the table set in a recreation of the wedding feast of William Morgan and Elizabeth Dayrell in 1676 (or possibly 1673 - the +National Trust and +Wikipedia seem to disagree).

This is a HDR comprised from 5 exposures bracketed at -4/-2/0/+2/+4 EV shot with the Canon 5D Mk III and 16-35mm f/2.8L II using a tripod. The individual exposures were merged to a 32-bit TIFF in +Adobe Photoshop then processed in +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to produce the result you see here.

The Beach at Southerndown

This is an old shot that I took back in July 2012, just when I was starting to get interested in photography, but had never processed. I've been watching some tutorial videos (links below, highly recommended - very powerful techniques explained in a manner simple enough that even a dolt like me can understand them) and learning some new post-processing techniques, so I was looking for landscape shots to try them out on and found this while combing through the darker reaches of my +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom catalogue.

This was shot with my trusty Canon 450D and 18-55mm kit lens, 0.6s @ f/20 and ISO100.

As for the post-processing, some initial adjustments were made in Lightroom then the heavy lifting was done in +Adobe Photoshop using all kinds of techniques that I'd never used before.

Many thanks to:

Daddy!

Just so he doesn't feel left out, a natural light portrait of my father. If you're wondering what my mother sees in him, well... so is she ;)

Mummy!

Natural light portrait of my mother taken last month at Tredegar House, a +National Trust property just outside Cardiff. She's clowning around trying on the period hats that they have for kids to dress up in - you literally can't take these people anywhere ;)

Shot with the Canon 24-105mm f/4L lens and Canon 5D Mk III @ 65mm, f4, ISO400. Post-processing done entirely in +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

onOne Software Rule!

+onOne Software just emailed me to offer me a free copy of their Perfect Effects 8 Premium Edition software! What did I do to deserve this, I hear you ask? I watched a bunch of their educational videos (also free! some of them even star +Brian Matiash!) and about a year ago I subscribed to their email list - that's all; I've never bought anything from them previously; I'm not even remotely famous; approximately 7 people on Google+ have me in circles (Hi Mum!).

So they sent me $100 worth of free software just to thank me for taking advantage of the resources they provide - how awesome is that! I mean... I'm now concerned for the future of their company because this seems like an unsustainable business model, BUT AT LEAST MY PHOTOGRAPHS WILL LOOK PRETTY.

So thanks +onOne Software - it's things like this that really distinguish you from the crowd, and the very least I can do is plug your company as hard as possible to all seven both of the people who have me in their circles. I can't wait to try out the new Perfect Effects on my back catalogue of unprocessed images.
