What I think of having cancer

I told myself I wouldn't become Cancer Guy, but it has a way of taking over everything. It becomes the one and only thing to deal with, so that's what I've been doing.

For the two or three of you interested, I'll be having surgery on May 1, barring anything weird/alarming showing up on a couple of upcoming MRI's. PET scans have shown no metastasizing, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

In the meantime I plan to have a relatively normal Easter and maybe make a few photographs. I hope you do the same.

This is when things get weird

So, last Friday I found out I have cancer in my colon. It still seems odd to write, but there it is. The word seems heavier when it's local, and now time is divided between when I didn't know and when I did. Every cough, every twinge now is cause for a question; is it the cancer?

I am a relatively private person and I have held this news close for almost a week before sharing on some social media outlets. Some of you, the two or three who follow my tumblr, saw it yesterday. So why would I share it now, here?

To tell you to get your screenings, people. I went in just because I thought it was time. I'm middle-aged and had never had a colonoscopy. If I had not gone, I wouldn't know, and it would have grown and grown until there was little I could do but be made comfortable.

As it is, we think it's pretty early. Still cause for concern, of course, but it may just be that we have found it in time that surgery and maybe some follow-up chemo/radiation may just knock it out. That's the hope, at any rate.

Right now I'm still in the testing stage. Blood tests, PET scans, all that, and next week I meet with surgeons to decide who will be lucky enough to open me up and get rid of the beastly thing inside me. After that, I will probably disappear for a few days for stay in the hospital.

Between now and then I will try to keep up here, but don't be offended if I rotate some "greatest hits" into the mix, as I will have scant time for new photos unless Nat wanders down or Anna comes to call.

For the insatiably curious, it's adenocarcinoma, my CEA is slightly elevated, and there's a good chance it's superficial. I'll find out more in the next week or so.

Please get yourself screened. The odds are my decision to go in may just save my life. Do the same for yourself.

If you've read this far, thanks, and if you have questions, I'll try to answer the best I can, if you understand that you know pretty much what I know at this point. If you don't, that's cool. USe the time to make yourself an appointment.

Hasta.

State of the Office

Current as of today. more stuff on the walls, printer now close. Makes it easier to lean in and curse it with quiet malice.

I hope so, too. The worry is over things I have to do that are being interrupted, and believe me, I'm not giving up. I'm far too stubborn for that.

Introduction
Welcome.

I'm glad you're here. I am primarily a people/portrait photographer, but I will toss a curve or two your way. Light and shadow interest me to an  almost obsessive level, so I photograph many, many things. Some of these things find their way into my stream. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but hey, it's my stream, right?

The experts insist that we only show our best face on social media, and I agree to a certain extent. My true face is my best, and I can be a little grumpy. I can also be inquisitive about things like online culture and the world of photography, and if that turns you off, I'm sorry.

I am also a tough audience. I have been in the game a long time and have seen a lot of photography, so I don't follow many people. That doesn't mean I'm a snob. It only means I like to look at photographs I think are interesting. If you're doing interesting work, let me know by interacting with my posts and, by extension, me. I check out everyone who pluses and/or comments on what I post.

If I think you're doing work that I find interesting, I will circle you back, and I will hope to share your work with others.

Thanks again for being here. Lets make some cool photos.
