Dream Valley II, mixed media on Russian linen, 30 x 40

I began painting my Land of Plenty series in 2005. Most of the early paintings in this series were done with oil paint sticks. I drew with them on canvases primed with red earth or yellow ocher tone. Using my hand, I rubbed pigments from the paint sticks into the canvas. Subsequent layers of paint were added with glazes of oil paint.

I stopped working on this series in 2008. Recently re-inspired, a new vision for the series is fueling new paintings. In these my process fuses willow charcoal and alkyd paint. Mixable with oil paint, alkyd paint has a matte finish and much tooth. This permits me to draw with charcoal into wet paint. This combination of drawing and painting, wet and dry media, appeals to me at a very primal level.

Grittiness of charcoal feels earthy, real. Floating washed colors feel radiant, divine. Blending these together satisfies my urge to paint.
