On the last point, I think the authors muffed their analysis a bit when they write that "impulse control runs against the grain of contemporary culture as well. Countless books and feel-good movies extol the virtue of living in the here and now, and people who control their impulses don’t live in the moment."
It may well be that I run in circles divorced from "contemporary" or have been fortunate to be surrounded by people who value and exhibit self-discipline and mindfulness - my father, Ben Howard, is a Zen teacher, after all [http://practiceofzen.com/about/] -- but I'm not sure about this point, at large.
The link between impulse control and success is well known, in the context of delayed gratification. Just google "Marshmallow Study" or consult more recent research: http://healthland.time.com/2011/01/24/the-key-to-health-wealth-and-success-self-control/
On a personal note, however, I found the first two elements pretty interesting. I have a healthy self-regard but also feel insecure about my personal and professional life at times. I hope that bodes well.
