Ever stop to add up the cost of all those lunches and dinners bought away from home?
Go ahead. Do it. I'll wait.
[waits...waits...]
Maybe now you're ready for this solution to your budget leaks:

As long as I do a laundry at least every eight days, I'm good.

When it comes to retooling your budget, start with the biggest-ticket items. Even if you think you're already getting a pretty sweet deal on cable, insurance or cellphone plan, you might be surprised.
I've long believed that only amateurs pay retail, so Insurance.com's recent survey about comparison shopping got my attention. Interviews with 2000 men and women about their deal-seeking behaviors were analyzed and then framed in terms of value per minute. Compare car insurance quotes now.

Daughters: They're apparently part of a smart retirement plan. http://shar.es/M6aDq via @sharethis
When middle-aged sons live with their parents, it’s probably because they’re underemployed or unemployed. But middle-aged daughters are more likely to bunk with their parents in order to take care ...

Short answer: Probably.
Both major retailers and Internet start-ups offer scheduled deliveries of everyday essentials or nice-to-have treats. But will you save any money this way?

Researching this piece made me realize how much I didn't know about shopping at Target. Things like the price match guarantee (one woman I know saved $60 -- that is not a typo), in-ad coupons you can use more than once, unadvertised promotions, coupon stacking, free return by mail, CouponMom.com's "Target Price Matcher Tool" (which includes Amazon prices) and other advantages add up to lots of ways to save.

Um...what?!?
Here’s a piece of advice from the rich: You ought to be able to live comfortably on $25,000 to $50,000 per year.

Go win one of these! The drawing takes place at 9 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July 18:
http://donnafreedman.com/2014/07/16/go-win-a-1000-visa-gift-card-before-9-p-m-july-18/
Three $1,000 Visa gift cards are being given away by Expedia and Savings.com. I see no reason why S&T readers shouldn't win all three.

If you're on the fence about FinCon14, better buy soon: The price goes up (noticeably) after 11:59 p.m. Monday.
http://donnafreedman.com/2014/06/28/for-the-best-fincon14-price-book-by-monday-night/
You don't have to be a blogger or even a PF specialist to attend the Financial Blogger Conference. And if you sign up by 11:59 p.m. Monday, you'll save $250.

How about it, folks: Do you have a "donate" button? Why or why not?
(Some interesting perspectives in the comments section of this piece.)
http://donnafreedman.com/2014/06/16/information-wants-to-be-free-writers-want-to-be-paid/
To some extent I can see the purpose of a "donate" button: It’s like paying for a magazine subscription. Sites that put out great stuff have writers who put great effort into the posts. Most don’t....

Story
Tagline
MSN Money frugality blogger, Get Rich Slowly staff writer
Introduction

Until recently I wrote a personal finance column for MSN Money. Now I write the Frugal Cool daily frugality site, also for MSN Money.

In addition, I am a staff writer at Get Rich Slowly and have my own site, Surviving and Thriving.

In my past life I was a newspaper journalist (Anchorage Daily News, Chicago Tribune) and freelanced for a wide variety of publications — everything from Quail Unlimited to the New York Times Review of Books.

My writing has won regional and national awards, including prizes from the Association of Women in Communications, the National College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of American Travel Writers and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

I went to college for one year, 1976-77, and then started back up in autumn 2005. In December 2009 I earned a degree in the Comparative History of Ideas (B.A., magna cum laude) from the University of Washington in Seattle, where I was a Mary Gates Scholar.

I'm mom to one daughter, Abigail, who writes a PF/disability blog called I Pick Up Pennies. She makes me proud.
