The sky is going to be filled with traffic over the next nine months. Multiple launches are scheduled from India, Japan, China, Europe, Russia, and the US.

It struck me how many launch sites are now in use: Florida, Virginia, California, Hawaii, Guiana, India, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, and probably others.

Jason 3 and SES 9 Launches Slip to August
Specific dates are yet to be determined. As publicized earlier, Jason 3 has been delayed due to a 'dirty thruster'. SES 9 is the maiden flight of Falcon 9 v1.2 and as such this delay should come as no surprise.

Definitely looks beautiful and interesting. I'm curious how much text they're cutting out and whether it keeps a good pace. I watched Jane Eyre recently on Netflix that was directed by the guy that did season one of True Detective and it was beautiful, but so slow and depressing. Hoping for good things for #Macbeth!

"If there’s anything that fans of the Hitchhiker’s trilogy know it’s that in order to fly, you must throw yourself at the ground and miss. And you can’t miss on purpose—you have to really fling yourself down, fully expecting to chip a tooth at best, and if you’re lucky, something will catch your attention at a crucial moment and you’ll simply fail to hit. Electron microscope video of phonograph needle in an LP groove. About 1/400 actual speed. Captured via Tektronix MDO3000 oscilloscope.

This video was made via the "stop motion" animation technique.  I moved the LP by 50 microns at a time, and captured a frame after each move. The setup inside the microscope was made possible by the fact that there are two separate stages with their own motion controls. I fixed the needle to one stage and the LP to the other so that I could get both parts into the frame at a good angle.

Otherworldly photographs...
In this new series of striking images, San Francisco-based photographer Beth Moon (previously) captures some of the world's oldest living trees against shimmering night skies in remote areas of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Titled Diamond Nights, the new photos were inspired in part by

This graphic offers a simple perspective of distances involved in space exploration. Keep in mind that no human has ever left Earth orbit, including those few trips to the moon.

The Future of Space Exploration | NASA SLS & Orion
The Space Launch System (SLS), Orion spacecraft and commercial crew and cargo vehicles are complementing initiatives that will support NASA’s space exploration goals. The commercial crew and cargo launch vehicles will support human space operation in low-Earth orbit, which is creating a supply line to and from the International Space Station. These types of vehicles can travel to destinations hundreds of miles beyond Earth.

The SLS heavy-lift rocket is designed for missions beyond Earth’s orbit into deep space regions where humans have not traveled since Apollo sent humans to the moon more than 40 years ago. SLS offers more versatility and provides unsurpassed capability for humans in Orion to travel to an asteroid 40,000 miles beyond the moon and eventually to Mars more than a million miles away, and for robotic science mission to places such as Mars, Saturn and Jupiter's Europa.
