We spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to motivate or engage employees when the solutions have been around forever. The gap is application, not knowledge. This is not rocket science as it’s probably similar to what you want for your career...

I have studied productivity for over 20 years. I’ve also observed and coached many dozens of HR executives in that time. Here’s what I’ve learned about the most productive HR executives:

They take action. There is so much to know. We can feel like we never know enough. We tell ourselves we’ll take action when we know just a little bit more. Great HR executives, just like great entrepreneurs, have no gap between learning and doing. The phrase I like to use is moving “from abstraction to action”...

As you probably guessed I do a great deal of writing and speaking. To check my head I use this checklist. Hope it helps you too.

- A strong headline.
- A strong opening sentence.
- What is this about?
- Who is your audience?
- How do you hook them?- ask a question, define a problem, make a bold statement, challenge them, spook ‘em, rhetorical question, startling assertion, did you know…, provide evidence/data, be a contrarian, imagine…, a metaphor,

1. Has the applicant gone to your store, used your products or services, spent time on your website or Yelp page, talked to a customer or employee to understand their experience? If so, that’s a good candidate!
2. Ask the applicant how they think their job will be affected by computers, robots and technology. Because it will be.
