Wanderers
Video Credit: Visuals: Erik Wernquist; Music: Christian Sandquist Words & Voice: Carl Sagan

How far out will humanity explore? If this video's fusion of real space imagery and fictional space visualizations is on the right track, then at least the Solar System. Some of the video's wondrous sequences depict future humans drifting through the rings of Saturn, exploring Jupiter from a nearby spacecraft, and jumping off a high cliff in the low gravity of a moon of Uranus. Although no one can know the future, wandering and exploring beyond boundaries -- both physical and intellectual -- is part of the human spirit and has frequently served humanity well in the past.

I think you expressed interest in a machine like this, but were unhappy with the price. It's come down quite a bit.

I wish that was a recent picture, but it's a few years old.

January Aurora Over Norway
Image Credit & Copyright: Bjørn Jørgensen

What's that in the sky? An aurora. A large coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days ago, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth's magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Pictured above is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured last night above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. This round of solar activity is not yet over -- a new and even more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday that might provide more amazing aurora as soon as tonight.

And I admit NFC hasn't been as useful as I thought because the phone has to be awake to trigger. It is cool to pay for stuff in a store using your phone.

+SpaceX's Falcon 9 Launches to the Space Station
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120523.html

This fire-breathing Dragon can fly. Pictured above yesterday, SpaceX Corporation's Falcon 9 rocket capped with a Dragon spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. The successful launch was significant not only because it demonstrated that a private company has the ability to re-supply the International Space Station (ISS), but also that spaceflight has taken a significant step away from being an endeavor that only big governments can do with public money. If all continues as planned, the robotic Dragon will dock with the ISS this weekend. Over the next two weeks, the ISS Expedition 31 crew will then unload Dragon and refill it with used scientific equipment. In about three weeks, the ISS's robotic arm will then undock Dragon and move it to where it can fire its rockets. Soon thereafter the Dragon capsule is expected to reenter the Earth's atmosphere, deploy its parachutes, splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, and be recovered.

Epic Video on the Death of Superman

Little known fact, I worked in a comic book store during the death of Superman. I was there when it all went down. This video is the funniest thing you'll watch all week.

I've ended up with two extra 970LM key fob garage door openers for any Lift Master door with a red pairing button. Anybody want them?

iOS 5 is syncing to my non mobile.me iCloud account just fine. However, it's demanding that I create a .me account to sync notes. Why?

It could be marketing, but it could also be related to (lower) power mode low precision modes for the GPS.

I've been considering running Google Locations all the time and trying to have some behaviors around the house auto-trigger from my locations, but I'm also worried about battery life. I'm already killing my phone pretty hard with over use, constant GPS drain would just make that worse.

Do doctors get sick more than non-doctors? In other words, does detailed medical knowledge help you be healthier?

Well, but the same thing can be said of financial advisers: if they're actually any good at generating and following good advice, they will be stinking rich and have no need to work as an adviser. And therapists would all be mentally stable and the cobbler's kids would have new shoes. The thing is, I think it's perfectly possible to know what the right thing to do is without having the will/discipline/means to actually do that for yourself.
