In the last few years, there have been incredible success applying Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to a variety of problems, such as speech recognition, language modeling, translation, image captioning and more.

Essential to these successes is the use of a very special kind of recurrent neural network architecture called Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), which accounts for long-term dependencies and relationships in data in order to produce amazing results.

But what are LTSMs, and how do they work? In a blog post, linked below, Google intern +Christopher Olah gives an overview of LSTMs, explaining why and how they work so well.
Recurrent Neural Networks. Humans don't start their thinking from scratch every second. As you read this essay, you understand each word based on your understanding of previous words. You don't throw everything away and start thinking from scratch again. Your thoughts have persistence.

remote controlled robots with real-time reflexes and super human strength. really fascinating considering the possibilities and a bit scary to think that the human part in it will probably be replaced by an AI at some point (hello #skynet :)

This would be a real game changer in computer technology. If this lives up to the promise, we're going to see some major performance improvements in any computing area imaginable. I wonder what the downsides are if there are any. Low latency, non volatile, 10 times the density of ram and nearly as fast AND cheap - this sounds like a wet dream of an intel engineer :)
Non-volatile memory is usually the bottleneck in electronics systems and computers, as it takes much longer to move data from storage than in RAM or cache, so any improvement may yield great benefits, especially when your application requires lots of I/Os. Micron and Intel claim to have ...

Great visualizations of different algorithms
Algorithms are a fascinating use case for visualization. To visualize an algorithm, we don't merely fit data to a chart; there is no primary dataset. Instead there are logical rules that describe behavior. This may be why algorithm visualizations are so unusual, as designers experiment with ...

What in the heck just happened? Google is now a wholly owned subsidiary of a new company Alphabet. Sundar Pichai is now CEO of Google.
August 10, 2015. G is for Google. As Sergey and I wrote in the original founders letter 11 years ago, “Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one.” As part of that, we also said that you could expect us to make “smaller bets in areas that might seem very speculative or ...

Imagine if, the next time you or your children feel ill, you could tell the computer what symptoms you're experiencing: "I have a sore throat, slightly runny eyes, and my back has been aching for the last 24 hours," and have the computer immediately suggest diagnoses, then try to connect you to a human doctor. Our AskADoctor project just came out of stealth, and is now providing this service to users (in China, in Chinese). Users find the natural language interface easier than traditional diagnosis systems that required users to navigate jargon-laden menus. I'm excited about Deep Learning's potential to improve healthcare worldwide, and am also inspired by this work as an example of how the rise of Deep Learning is allowing teams to create innovative new services.  Congrats to Wei Fan and team on this launch! tiny chip which can precisely measure and evaluate motion in finger or hand gestures. this is pretty astonishing and has impressive practical usages (if it works as advised, i'll believe it when i've seen it :-)

great insights for preparing presentations

At the risk of taking things entirely too seriously, I wrote this article in which I tried to convey my thoughts on preparing and giving public presentations. What was intended to be a few quick thoughts turned into a fairly long piece.
So if you care about presenting, or are just bored and want something long to read, please check it out.
