This year we are turning 9 years old. Donate today & help us reach 10 years! In today's landscape of pit bull propaganda and the escalating number of violent attacks, our nonprofit is needed now more than ever. Learn what was true 9 years ago, and the event that triggered a rapid rise in pit bull maulings across the U.S. #Donate #Charity #nonprofit #Truth

What was true 9 years ago?

In 2007, few people had heard of Facebook. It opened to the public in September 2006. Few people had heard of Twitter either, which launched in July 2006. Frankly, when DogsBite began in October 2007, social media was still an "experiment." Today, about 35% of our research -- discovering the victim's family members, the dog owner and photographs of the dogs (http://bit.ly/2a8MiJo) -- is done on social media. This is how we can break big stories, such as the workings of an Intrafamily Backyard Pit Bull Breeding Operation (http://bit.ly/29ZZU8J).

What else was true back then?

Pit bull propaganda "ruled" the much less cluttered web. So much so, the founder of DogsBite.org, Colleen Lynn, determined there must be a website created that shares the truth about dangerous breeds, the horrific damage they inflict when they attack and what surviving victims endure in the aftermath. By the end of 2008, we began tracking legislation (http://bit.ly/2abQOFq) and the constitutionality (http://bit.ly/1jBXmYr) of these laws too. We became a library -- providing a resource for jurisdictions seeking to prevent these attacks through breed-specific laws.

What was the event 9 years ago?

An event that would trigger a rapid rise in pit bull rescue groups and multiple national campaigns to rebrand pit bulls as "America's Dog." An event that would trigger a steep escalation in pit bull maulings nationwide (http://bit.ly/29GCXob). That event was the conviction of Michael Vick, and the United States government's subsequent appointment of a guardian/special master over Vick's 48 remaining pit bulls (http://bit.ly/2alt7sz). The special master then distributed the dogs to 8 rescue agencies for "rehabilitation" and when possible, adoption into family homes.

DogsBite.org is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible. Learn more about our nonprofit at GuideStar.com (http://www.guidestar.org/profile/27-1527147)

Your tax-deductible donation goes directly toward:

• Preventing new state anti-BSL preemption bills. In late June, the Delaware legislature rejected an anti-BSL bill that was introduced "late session" by Utah-based fighting dogs advocates, Best Friends. So far in 2016, 7 states have rejected these bills and one embraced it, Arizona, but only through a backdoor deal by Best Friends that also negated local puppy mill ordinances.

• In depth coverage and data collection about all U.S. fatal dog attack victims. This "grim," perpetual and difficult task should be undertaken by the CDC, the United States health organization whose mission is to "protect America from health, safety and security threats." The CDC will no longer research this area due to pressures from animal welfare and veterinarian groups (http://bit.ly/1nxiwfB).

• Identifying key trends to save lives and help parents make better decisions. So far in 2016, over 50% of all fatal dog attack victims were visiting or living temporarily with the owner of the dog when the attack happened. Children usually suffer the most. In one case this year, Child Protection Services (http://bit.ly/2anFzKz) had granted the child unsupervised visits with his sister and her three pit bulls!

• Hosting & security costs. We cannot afford our website to go down during wildly high traffic surges. When people learn of a new horrific pit bull attack, Google searches for "pit bull attack" and "are pit bulls dangerous" skyrocket. We must have more expensive hosting services to account for these unexpected surges or risk removal from a lower cost hosting solution.

• Printing and mailing costs. On July 11, we ran out of our 3,000 neighborhood safety campaign brochures (http://bit.ly/2a7TOz4). The safety brochure has 5 panels of vital information including, how to identify the most dangerous dog breeds (full color photographs), how to identify the dog's owner, reporting violations and the most dangerous scenarios to avoid. Professional printing is costly!

PS. One more thing has changed in 9 years.

We have all grown 9 years older and wiser. Even the child in our masthead has. She appears to be a teenager by now (http://bit.ly/2a0BYPC). We must endure to ensure that future generations are not "beset" with fighting breeds living next door. For nearly 200 years, they have been. The Baltimore Sun reported in 1844: "The bull terrier … is perhaps the very worst description of a dog with which we are beset in our community. They are always fierce, and it is a rare circumstance that even their masters have control over them." (http://bit.ly/2aFyV00)

DogsBite.org is a national dog bites' victim group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks.
Introduction
DogsBite.org is a national dog bite victims' group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks. Through our work, we hope to protect both people and pets from future attacks. Our website contains a wide collection of data to help policymakers and citizens learn about dangerous dogs. Our research focuses on pit bull type dogs. Due to selective breeding practices that emphasize aggression and tenacity, this class of dogs negatively impacts communities the most. DogsBite.org hosts important dog bite fatality and injury studies in the Bite Statistics section of our website. We also provide documentation of pit bull facts and fiction. In the Legislating Dogs portion of our site, we offer a key FAQ sheet about breed-specific laws (BSL), examples of these laws (state by state) and the constitutionality of these laws. The Victim Realities section of our website offers a glance into the unforgettable stories victims leave behind and much more.
