If we extrapolate current trends indefinitely into the future, then by 2025 every spreadsheet attached to a genetics paper will have an error—unless, of course, there is an error in the spreadsheet we used for this calculation.

Friends don't let friends use Excel.
Spreadsheets are playing havoc with scientists

Weekend of two home town concerts:
- Gord Downie and the #TragicallyHip in Kingston, and wordwide via the CBC (see http://goo.gl/hIG41m for great write-up)
- Very nice to see Wilco light up Millenium Park last night concluding the recent tour
On Saturday, Mr. Downie, who has terminal brain cancer, played what could be his last major outing with that venerable Canadian band.

Bad wording on my part. Wilco seemingly never stops touring :)

These large choirs are so powerful, and a nice response to today's social chasms. Artists have such an important role to play in bringing us back together! There's a French choir with over 1,000 chorists that's amazing too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBuCCMjXn9o

No amount of lipstick changes the the pig.

Let's stop pretending spreadsheet are for reliable quality data work.
Excel's default settings are causing scientific screw-ups

Then hope that this "warning people" works: I wouldn't bet on it... "Make it easier to do the same analysis in more reliable tools", that would be a nice thing (and I think a lot of work is done in that direction).

If you are into Jazz, chances are you listened to recording by Rudy van Gelder for hours, days, weeks, months, years, ...

He pretty much was Blue Note records.
The legendary jazz engineer died on Thursday at the age of 91. To get a sense of his talents, listen to this recording of Thelonious Monk’s “Hackensack."

Quick note just to say that the I'm feeling lucky mix by +Google Play is in fine form today, feeding my +Sonos with a steady mix of Prince, Marvin Gaye and the occassional jazz.

I listed to this when it streamed live yesterday, and it is pretty epic.

Thanks, +NPR Music and +St Paul and the Broken Bones -- really looking forward to the November 1 gig in Chicago!
Listen to the rollicking soul band perform songs from its upcoming sophomore album, Sea Of Noise.
