Don’t Get Yourself Stuck In A Slump

Have you ever been stuck in a slump? A stretch of time where, despite your best efforts, nothing seems to be going as planned? If you have, you’re in good company.

Every athlete, professional or otherwise, has experienced a slump. Just this past NBA season, the eventual Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat started March with a losing record for the month and with their star forward LeBron James in the middle of a shooting drought (by his standards). They were able to turn this trend around and finish the regular season just one month later with the second best record in their conference.

Any athlete will tell you that the difference between staying stuck in a slump and coming out of it is entirely mental. As Michael Jordan once said, “The mental part—the hardest part—separates the good players from the great players.” An athlete must erase their mistakes and start fresh. When they fail to do this, they stay in their slump and keep missing shots, striking out, or dropping passes.

The same is true in our own lives. We need an erase button to stay focused on the present. All of us can get stuck replaying the tape of what happened yesterday over and over again. Instead, we need to let it go and move on. If we’re too hard on ourselves, it’ll be that much more difficult to break out of the slump.

It’s time we let go of the slip-ups of yesterday and set our sights on the promise of today. If we don’t, we might just miss out on our future.
