#Picher #Oklahoma, the modern-day #GhostTown

"Picher is a ghost town and former city in #OttawaCounty, Oklahoma, United States. Much of the land was originally owned by the Quapaw after Indian Removal. In the early 20th century, #mining took place initially under federal leases of these lands but the Quapaw did not receive a fair share of royalties and were generally excluded from the thousands of mining jobs in the region. In 2000, they comprised a significant minority of the population in the city. This was a major national center of #lead and #zinc mining at the heart of the Tri-State Mining District.
More than a century of unrestricted subsurface excavation dangerously undermined most of Picher's town buildings and left giant piles of toxic metal-contaminated mine #tailings (known as #chat) heaped throughout the area. The discovery of the cave-in risks, groundwater #contamination, and health effects associated with the chat piles and subsurface shafts resulted in the site being included in 1980 in the Tar Creek Superfund Site by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The state collaborated on mitigation and remediation measures, but a 1996 study found that 34% of the children in Picher suffered from #leadpoisoning due to these environmental effects, which could result in lifelong neurological problems. Eventually #EPA and the state of Oklahoma agreed to a #mandatoryevacuation and #buyout of the entire township. The similarly contaminated satellite towns of Treece, Kansas and Cardin, Oklahoma were included in the #TarCreek #Superfund site.
A 2006 Army Corps of Engineers study showed 86% of Picher's buildings (including the town school) were badly undermined and subject to collapse at any time.[5] The destruction of 150 homes by an F4 tornado in May 2008 accelerated the exodus. On September 1, 2009, the state of Oklahoma officially dis-incorporated the city of Picher. The town ceased official operations on September 1, 2009 and the population plummeted from 1,640 at the 2000 census to 20 at the 2010 census. As of January 2011, only six homes and one business remain, their owners having refused to leave at any price. The rest of the town's buildings, except designated historical structures, were scheduled to be demolished by the end of the year.
Picher is among a small number of locations in the world (such as Gilman, Colorado, Centralia, Pennsylvania, and Wittenoom, Western Australia) to be evacuated and declared uninhabitable due to environmental and health damage caused by the mines the town once serviced.
The closest towns to Picher, other than nearby Cardin, Treece and Douthat, are Commerce, Quapaw (the headquarters of the nation by that name) and Miami, Oklahoma."

I'm just curious (and fine, a little confused!), about this new google stuff.
Introduction
I just decided that my profile was too long-winded, so I erased it.  Suffice to say, this photo collection was created initially mostly for online storage of data.., then I realized that people actually looked at this stuff.  Try not to judge too harshly.  This is the only spot I don't bother censuring the content - so a lot of it sucks.

I asked for dark meat, they gave me white. I asked for Diet Dr Pepper, they gave me Diet Coke. The biscuits and roll were not fresh. In fact, nothing I ordered was too particularly fresh. For as long as I had to wait, I figured it would be. I was wrong. I'll probably avoid this location from now on.

CASH ONLY. I forgot this tonight and found myself frantically searching for change in the drive thru. A lot of people say that the employees are rude, but they've always been very nice to me, they're just very direct and I get the feeling they won't put up with any BS. But, I'm always nice to them, and they've been nice back - even when I handed them a handful of change tonight. The waffles rock. The chicken is the best fried chicken I've ever tasted. Be SURE to get extra seasoning, as much as you can afford! The seasoning is 50¢ additional a piece, I think. It's worth it either way, get at least two extra. We call this food, "chicken crack," because it's like cocaine for your taste buds. You'll be hooked, I promise. Other reviewers have mentioned cold food..., I've never had anything served to me that wasn't super fresh, so either I'm lucky or they were unlucky. Anyways, I highly recommend this location if you're in the mood for some seriously good soul food. Just be prepared to possibly wait a while in the drive through and BRING CASH! It's so freaking good.... I'd wait all night long if I had to! *** Rudy's is another very similar establishment that is often compared to here. Rudy's is good, but Big Mama's is better!

Ten minutes for 2 cinnamon rolls? I've watched three cooked meals go out before mine that were placed after my order. After all that waiting, they were barely even warm, which seemed odd, considering how long they were placed in the oven apparatus(?) under the front counter. The two stars goes to the adjacent convenient store. I'd give them four stars if this review wasn't attached to the neighboring Whataburger. They have the most awesome snack selection I've ever seen, including yogurt with a fresh topping buffet! The lady behind the counter was very sweet too. It's always nice to have someone tell you to have a good day and sound like they really mean it.

SUPPLEMENTAL 12-15: I did not believe at possible, but they have, and fact, gotten worse. Even on my most creative day I could not have screwed up (even on purpose!) as completely as Toyota did this time around. I took it in to be serviced for six specific things: First and one of the top two most critical items, was the mysterious deformity in my trunk, almost to the point where it would not close completely. This had the unfortunate side effect of getting everything in my trunk what if the car was washed for it rained. I was told this was a body issue. That was fine, I assumed as much. I was told they would send it to the shop and in a couple days I would have my car back, repaired. I asked them to delay informing my insurance until I found out if it would affect my rates. They agreed. 2. The other major thing was my tires were completely bald. As far as I can tell, this is the only service provided that was done adequately. They actually put tires on my car. I've been taking my vehicle(s) to this dealership, and have even purchased 3 vehicles at the Grapevine location, since they opened over a decade ago. Unfortunately, there has been a gradual yet steady decline in service over the last 3-5 years. Last year, I had my car inspected and serviced, and they overlooked the most blatant issue which was a missing side view mirror. The service manager indicated that he would call the next morning "personally" and have me in-and-out in about 15 minutes that following day. I never heard back from anyone. The car detail was poorly done and they even managed to break part of the underside on my drivers seat as well as overlook simple yet obvious details and/or common sense areas of overall service. I was very disappointed in the work. My inspection/service is due this month and after reading the positive reviews of late, I'm hopeful that this dealership has improved as much as the previous raters state in their reviews...

Let me preface this by stating that this move took place almost a year ago. I had thought that I left a review on Google, but I was mistaken. So I am here now to rectify that mistake in hopes that I can spare someone else from the horrible experience that I had. In short, I only had two items, a couch and a piano, to be moved approximately 4-5 miles between point A and B: 1. Within one five mile transport, my quote went from 360.00 to 520.00 dollars (they made sure to tell me twice that this did not include gratuity), This "move," consisted of TWO items and a 10-15 minute drive (1 couch, 1 piano). Evidently, the additional amount went towards, "fuel and travel expenses," which they had "forgot" to mention until already at point B, and everyone had left but myself. The entire point B unloading process took all of ten minutes. 2. This is the biggest kicker: One of the three movers pocketed 20.00 out of the amount I paid (in cash - BIG mistake)! I had counted & recounted the cash three times before handing it over. I was talking to the other two movers, while the third one (this mover never lifted a finger in my presence, aside from handing me a pen), was rechecking the amount. I knew as soon as he said it was short, he had stolen it. I counted it again, and, big surprise! It was short 20.00. But, I'm alone (they conveniently decided to complete this transaction as soon as my roommate and her boyfriend had left me alone with them). There's three of them, one of me, and my items are in their possession. I couldn't see how I could prove that he stole it or really do anything but give them another $20.00 at the time. Of course, they had already been tipped after they reminded me a THIRD time that gratuity was EXPECTED and not included. They made their displeasure of my 20.00 per mover (60.00 total) clear. Ironically, they should have been the ones paying me for their dishonesty, deception and theft. 3. Right after they left, I realized the took a size able chunk out of the side of my piano. 4. They evidently left one of my couch cushions in their truck, and once I realized this, I went to call them and realized they had not only taken my signed paperwork, but made off with all of my copies as well! At the end of the day, I had spent 540.00 for the relocation of two items, both damaged in the process. Rarely have I ever used a "reputable," company and walked away, not only feeling discouraged and ripped off, but truly violated in a sense that only someone who has been conned before, can totally understand. It's a terrible feeling, and I would use ANYBODY besides this moving company. I cannot underscore how horrible this experience has been! I would give zero stars if I could. Hopefully, it was only these particular individuals, and not a reflection on the overall company, but I would not take that risk, knowing what I know now. *Side note: One year ago, I moved items from two locations into one home, as well as had to travel approximately 30 miles one way, with another company. I was charged only twice what these "professionals," charged me. Just FYI.
