Millennium Bridge

Spanning over the River Thames between Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge, this 325 meters long pedestrian-only suspension bridge links Bankside and Tate Modern with the City of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. Designed by Arup, Norman Foster and Sir Anthony Caro, this symbolic combination of engineering and art was the winning entry in a international competition held in 1996 for the upcoming millennium celebrations.

The bridge's lateral suspension eliminates the need for tall supporting columns and creates a shallow profile which not only preserves the view of several landmarks on either side but provides numerous vantage points to capture the city's breathtaking skyline. With its unique architecture resembling a “blade of light”, the Millennium Bridge instantly became an irreplaceable part of London's diverse character.

However, upon opening to the public, problems quickly arose as an unexpected swaying motion was reported by the participants of the first bridge crossing. The rumor about the unusual wobbling sensation quickly spread and soon thousands of locals gathered to experience it first-hand. It was discovered that resonant structural response was causing this unwanted effect and even though modifications were implemented to damp down the dramatic movement, the Millennium Bridge kept its nickname - "The Wobbly Bridge".

If you visit #FarnboroughGate during the early mornings of Saturdays or Sundays, you will witness loads of #adrenalins from the younger generations.

There was a time that they closed accessed in the bigger car park, however, for some reasons, the management re-opened it.
