Love and Wisdom
Dr. John Demartini
I was blessed with an offer to become marketing professor at a renowned university in Ecuador. Before I made my decision, I did a little research and observed, almost all professors believed that today students do not know the value of education, don't want to study or compete, are lazy, procrastinate and do not want to mount high in their lives etc. I did another research on students, asked questions and found, most classes were extremely boring & meaningless to students and they could not relate, what they were told to study with their lives or real world. I then discussed with my director that I’ll be more than happy to accept the challenge provided that he gives me a free hand to teach. I do not want to be a traditional teacher. I want to give my own twist to divide my course duration into two parts theoretical & practical. He agreed
During my first course I told my students how sad, university student body has no name. Let’s come up with a cool name and make it famous through the power of marketing and that is going to be your practical learning. After brain storming they decided to be known as DINAMIKA (Dynamic). Believe it or not lately it became so famous that everyone in campus who knew me or not started calling me and my classes Dinamika
That was the beginning and nearly for 6 years, I accomplished great things one after another. I remember some times as I would walk through campus or sit in a canteen students would come to me and say, hey you are that Dinamika teacher right? I would respond yes, how can I serve you? “My major is psychology but I want to take a marketing course with you” sure most welcome! After taking a course with me some students even changed their major to marketing. It was all because my classes had hands on real life practical projects. Which were fun & at times very challenging but over all deep learning experience. Some students even mentioned in university magazine that it was the only course they will remember from their entire educational career
I found I absolutely love teaching and did many experiments in my classes. Initially I observed some of my classes had huge success most students were really involved, focused and were congruent with their practical project & in other classes not. I knew if I could answer two questions, I’ll then be able to make almost every class a success
1. Is there a strategy that makes some classes huge success?
2. Can I true it into a reproducible strategy that can work almost like science?
Next term in one of my classes, I gave each student a personal goal to achieve. In second class I divided students into small groups of 5 students in each group & gave each group a separate goal to achieve. In third class I set one goal for whole class to achieve and still divided students into small groups who chose their own tasks to accomplish
Even though the students of first class were as smart and literate as any other classes but some 80% of them came to me with different excuses that why they couldn’t achieve their goals. Those 20% who achieved their goals also mostly did because they wanted to pass the course & not because they were enthused to learn through it
In second class two groups were really enthused, involved & competed each other, yet other three groups gave up as things got harder & accomplished their minimum requirements to achieve the goal in a very slow & unsteady pace. Their involvement was not very appreciating, at times they yelled at their own group members for being lazy & not taking responsibilities. Some of them even came to me requesting to change their group or that I shall give them some extra work to pass the course
In third class however some 90% of students were really enthused, focused & involved. I could see some students were switching their groups because they believed they were good at accomplishing the requirements of other group tasks. Most students were busy brain storming their ideas, taking responsibilities on their own, meeting each other even after class & I did not have to follow up over & over again. Harmony was made, I could almost hear the humming & they even achieved their goal before due date. Everyone had their own story to tell how his/her contribution led to their class goal achievement. Once again it was a huge success & every student had a deep learning experience
After that experiment I learned & made my mind to set one goal for whole class to achieve & for nearly four years not even once I had any class which couldn't achieve their goal. In the beginning all classes goals were only marketing related but then I thought if they can market successfully maybe they can also make money. I took another calculated risk & set off a 200$ goal for entire class 50$ per group, they loved it & that’s right they achieved. Then I set off a 500$ then a 1000$ then a 5000$..& then only a class of 17 students achieved 22000$ in less than 2 months
Students’ word of mouth went out & I ended up giving many lectures & classes to many other universities across the country. I even gave classes to teachers how they can follow Dinamika class model & bring some real world practical for their students into their classes. I was interviewed by different local and national magazines, appeared on radio and even national TV shows. I was requested to co-author a book which I wrote chapters on Marketing and Client Service.I gave public talks, seminars and sales training's for different companies as well. All of this happened because of Dinamika class success
With the synchronicity of these successes & to me amazing accomplishments, I had to face great challenges. On one side a large number of students, faculty and administration loved me and on other hand there were those who were threaten by my work, some respected professors thought I hate them & making the minds of students negative about them, some of the university high echelons thought that I want to take over the university or something, I was asked what do I want to do? Who do I think I am? I was no longer given a free hand to teach & was imposed to go back to the traditional way of teaching, which I didn't cos I wanted to be authentic. Once on defending myself alone I unfolded the facts one after another in front of the entire board, that because of my classes many of students have became entrepreneurs, running their own businesses in a very young age & going high places. In my classroom no one sleeps, 90% of students interact, get involve and want to learn for the sake of learning and not just to pass the course, there are ample reason why I should be allowed to continue my model of teaching it’s not just me it’s the matter of future generations. Yes my requests were denied & I had to follow the traditional way. Instead a new rule was assigned that there should not be anymore Dinamika or what so ever practical projects inside or outside university. After that my classes went through scrutiny. Next year I was not given any new course to teach, obviously I went to inquire & told my director am I not the most influential, productive, dynamic, result oriented and accomplished professor they have? He said yes but it’s the decision of university board, they couldn't even fire me. I remember that night inside my study room, I was enjoying so many wonderful and beautiful memories of Dinamika classes that I got tears in my eyes, my hand turn into a fist and I said to myself what they didn't let me continue, my little bit of difference that I was making in a class room of a small university in a small country, I’ll find a way to take it to all over the world
Well after a little over a year my destiny have brought me to New York & I am dedicated to develop world’s first FREE institute of practical education, Dinamika School of Entrepreneurs. God willing! I am gonna do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true, serve the world helping more people become ultimate entrepreneurs, prosperous and make a difference.
