December Rose is a collection of some of my images from the Columbus Park of Roses taken on December 1; World AIDS Day. The book is offered on-line with 90% of proceeds being donated to AIDS research. At the moment few copies are being sold, as it is only available at that one web-site and has no advertising budget. Proceeds from the sale of this shirt will be used to purchase an ISBN so it can be sold by bookstores, and fund a marketing campaign to promote the book for the 2013 holiday season. This shirt is available for a limited time only, and the design will not be offered again.
“Why roses?” you might ask. I could talk about the symbolism; red for intense passion, pink for friendship, white for purity, yellow for jealousy. I could ruminate on how artificial modern hybrid roses are; genetically-altered mutants bred for human pleasure regardless of the impact on Mother Nature. The truth is that I did not select roses. I was at the Park of Roses, taking a few photographs. While shooting, my thoughts turned to the date, and some of the many friends I’ve lost over the past three decades.
