Thousands Attend Vigil as Death Toll of Montecito Mudslides Rises to 20; Officials ID Latest Victim as 30-Year-Old Father.
Thousands of people gathered at a vigil at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse on Sunday, hours after officials announced that the death toll of the Montecito mudslides reached 20.
The latest victim was identified as 30-year-old Pinit Sutthithepa. He was found in the area of Hot Springs Road near Olive Mill Road, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said.
His 6-year-old son, Peerawat, and his 79-year-old father-in-law, Richard Loring Taylor, were also among the dead, officials said. His 2-year-old daughter, Lydia, was still missing.
Pinit is survived by his wife and mother, according to a GoFundMe page started by Mike Caldwell, who identified himself as the victim's supervisor at a Santa Barbara car dealership.
Pinit's wife and mother were at work at a Vons when the tragedy happened, the webpage said.
"This family has lost everything but the clothes they were wearing," Caldwell wrote. "Clothing, food, shelter and comfort has been provided by the families' employers, friends and teachers...But this family needs significant funding to move forward with their lives."
As of Sunday evening, more than $111,000 has been donated through the page.
In addition to Lydia Sutthithepa, authorities named three other people who remained unaccounted for: John “Jack” Cantin, 17; Faviola Benitez Calderon, 28; and John “Jack” Keating, 53.
As of Sunday morning, officials said they were working on the incident as a search-and-recovery effort, and no longer a search-and-rescue mission.

8 People Still Missing in Deadly Montecito Mudslides as Search of Damaged Homes Continues.
Rescuers are frantically combing for survivors Thursday after rivers of mud and boulders crushed homes two days ago in Santa Barbara County, killing at least 17 people, weeks after a massive fire charred the area.
At least eight people are missing after Tuesday's mudslides in and around the oceanside community of Montecito, officials said. An earlier report from county officials that 48 were missing was a "clerical error," the sheriff's office said.
As anxious residents await word on their loved ones, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the priority is on finding survivors.
"Right now, our assets are focused on determining if anyone is still alive in any of those structures that have been damaged," Brown said Wednesday.
Rescue workers are using helicopters in a search hampered by blocked roads and downed trees and power lines.
Latest developments
• Deadly storm: All 17 deaths were reported in Santa Barbara County, authorities said. An additional 28 people were injured in the county.
• Destruction: Floodwaters and mudslides destroyed 65 homes and damaged 462 other residences in Santa Barbara County, spokeswoman Susan Klein-Rothschild said Thursday. Eight commercial buildings were destroyed, and 20 were damaged. About 2,200 structures total are either damaged or threatened, Cal Fire said.

Girl,14, Rescued After Being Trapped for Hours Under Collapsed Montecito Home.
A 14-year-old girl who was trapped for hours inside a collapsed Montecito home was safely pulled out of the rubble by firefighters Tuesday morning.
A photo posted by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department shows firefighters helping the girl sit up after she was pulled from the debris.
The girl’s home was just one of several destroyed in Montecito amid Tuesday’s heavy rainstorm.
Six homes in the area were “completely wiped away from their foundations and destroyed” by rivers of mud and debris, Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Mike Eliason said.
Officials did not provide any further information on the girl’s condition or if any of her family members had been trapped.
Firefighters have rescued at least eight people in Montecito, and the “numbers are expected to go up significantly,” Eliason said.

1 Dead, 1 Hospitalized After Gardena Police Pursuit Ends in Vehicle Fire.
One person is dead and another hospitalized after a Gardena Police Department pursuit ended an apparent crash and a vehicle catching on fire Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to Normandie Avenue and Century Boulevard about 10:30 a.m. by the Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Joey Marron said. The intersection is in the unincorporated Westmont area near South L.A.
Sheriff’s officials said the end of a pursuit resulted in a vehicle fire, Marron said. A sheriff's spokesperson told it was a Gardena police pursuit, and that the Sheriff's Department responded only to help with traffic and crowd control.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed a Jeep-like SUV had apparently crashed into a power pole and was totaled; about a dozen police vehicles were on scene.
One person was dead on arrival and another was taken to a local hospital, Marron said.
It’s not clear exactly what caused the fire or why a pursuit had taken place. Gardena police have not responded to a request for details.

The first major rainstorm in nearly a year moved in Southern California on Monday, bringing light showers that will intensify in the afternoon.

Authorities have ordered evacuations of Santa Barbara County neighborhoods that sit below areas recently burned by wildfires.
Residents who live in the following areas were told to evacuate by noon Monday: north of Highway 192, east of Cold Springs Road, and west of Highway 150/the county line, as well as along Tecolote Canyon, Eagle Canyon, Dos Pueblos Canyon, Gato Canyon and in the Whittier fire burn areas near Goleta.

Santa Clarita Father Shot 2 Children, His Wife in Suspected Murder-Suicide: Sheriff’s Officials.
A family of four, including an 11-year-old boy, were killed in a suspected murder-suicide that appears to have been committed by a father in Santa Clarita Friday morning, authorities said.
Those killed were identified by friends as 51-year-old Michael Birnkrant, his 47-year-old wife, Amy, and their two children — daughter Drew who is in her early 20s and an 11-year-old son.
Photos posted on daughter Drew Birnkrant’s social media accounts showed her with her younger brother, the friends confirmed.
The shooting "appears to be a murder-suicide in which the husband shot and killed three individuals and then turned the gun on himself," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Rodney Moore said.
All were found shot in the chest in their Pacific Hills home, and a gun was located near Michael's body, according to investigators.
The bodies were not all in one room, but rather across different locations throughout the house, Moore said.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene of the killings in the 28800 block of Startree Lane at about 7 a.m. after friends of Amy's requested a welfare check at the home on Friday after not seeing her for a few days, officials said.

Armed Man Fatally Shot by Long Beach Police After Allegedly Holding Holiday Inn Employees Hostage.
A man was fatally shot by Long Beach police early Friday after he allegedly held a Holiday Inn employees hostage with a gun, officials said.
The incident occurred about 12:50 a.m. when a man apparently left his pickup truck parked at an adjacent Chevron station and went into the hotel, police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt told KTLA.
Police then received a call from one of the employee who was allegedly being held hostage by the suspect at the Holiday Inn at 2640 North Lakewood Blvd. Responding officers found the man armed with a gun. They tried to "make contact" with the man when the officer-involved shooting occurred, Pratt said. She did not elaborate on what led to the shooting.
The man, described only as being in his 30s, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Pratt said.
No one else was injured during the incident and a gun was recovered at the scene.
Pratt said investigators are trying to piece together what happened and it could be “some time” before they get a clear picture of what occurred.
The hotel is near the 405 Freeway and the Long Beach Airport. Employees were asked to avoid the lobby when coming into work Friday morning and use the service elevator.
