Before being reformed in Argentina the electoral college had no electoral base per state, plus we have more than two parties (and still changing, all the time). One cool consequence of that is that even if noone got the majority the electoral college had to agree to elect a president, which came after the electors negotiation. The first offers the second to run some departments or the second offers the fourth... etc. Until there is a deal. Now we have ballotage or second round which might be even worse. Lets suppose the first round ends up with: right-wing-A 20% right-wing-B 20% left-wing-C/D/E/F/G/H 10% each. The people will have to decide between A and B but the 60% doesn't like right-wing. Thus, it's not representative.

e?est that unvocalization stop between the e sounds makes me relate it to how we stress syllables with the same vowel in Spanish. While papa (potato) and papá (father) only changes which syllable is more stressed, e?est might be written eést in Spanish and you would get a similar pronunciation.
