Dear Warner Brothers Marketing Department:
Hiya. I know you're busy, trying to find people who are posting leaked copies of your BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: RAINCLOUD OF JUSTICE trailer. Maybe it's you. And that's what we need to talk about.
See, people have known for over a year that Star Wars Celebration was happening this week in Anaheim. That date has been circled on a lot of calendars. This is the last Celebration event before the first STAR WARS movie to get released in ten years.
In all sincerity: the person in your midst who thought it was a good week to even start trying to build buzz about SCOWL OF JUSTICE deserves to be demoted to the Mail Room. Because there was no way we weren't going to get hit with a new FORCE AWAKENS trailer yesterday. It was as inevitable as Roland Emmerich destroying the White House.
Now, please understand - I have room in my heart for more than STAR WARS. I really do. So does the majority of Geek Nation. However, you have to understand, the time to start building anticipation for EVERYONE HATES SUPES: GLOWER OF JUSTICE is not when vast swaths of the planet are swooning over one line of dialogue that we've waited 32 years to hear, whether we knew it or not.
As I'm reminded, time and again, the two keys to any successful marketing campaign are TIMING, and BLIND LUCK. Don't sabotage one with the other.
P.S. - Doubling down on the darkness for the first look at GRIMACE OF JUSTICE? Also not that bright. As gritty as MAN OF STEEL was, the trailers still had that bright pop to 'em, that reminded people that Superman - even after you strip the dogma and artifice away - embodies hope. C'mon.
