Like botanical fireworks.
The Dahlia is originally from Mexico, but was adopted as the official flower of San Francisco in 1926. The Dahlia Society of California plants and tends an incredible Dahlia Garden every year in San Francisco, just to the East of the Conservatory of Flowers. And it’s blooming like crazy right now.

When Heather and I started thinking about a trip to Santa Barbara, we hadn’t planned on staying on a goat farm. But when we the opportunity to stay on a working farm in nearby Lompoc found us, we had to say yes. Little did we know that the momma goats had given birth only a few days before our arrival.

Thrilled to be asked to write this essay for BQO. I've been working on this stuff for 20 years now.
You're reading a story on the web and your eyes accidentally drift down to the comments. Within moments, lost in a sea of atrocious behavior and even worse grammar, your view of humanity clicks down another few notches. It's an experience so common it's spawned a mantra: Don't Read The Comments.

I wrote a review of the new Flickr for TechHive. TLDR: Boo.
Flickr always had its share of problems. The servers used to crash. The design was simplistic, then confusing, then outdated. The first iOS app was laughable. But the one thing you could always rely on Flickr for was honesty. From back in the day when cofounder Stewart Butterfield wrote a blog post titled “Sometimes We Suck,” to its current community guidelines, one of which simply says “Don’t be creepy,” you could always trust Flickr to speak si...

I dreamed of building some sort of tiny killer nanobots to crawl every last leaf and destroy all those aphids one by one. Then I realized that nature already created such a thing: Ladybugs.

Magnolia trees have been around for 200 million years. The San Francisco Botanical Garden has the fourth largest collection in the world, with 200 trees and 90 species, some planted as long ago as the 1800s.

Tom Coates is a San Francisco-based product designer who is obsessed with connected devices. So much so, he's using sensors and networked services to give his house a voice, at least on Twitter. His @HouseofCoates Twitter account is an amazing and often hilarious window into the future.

Two stories of internet justice to discuss using cameras as weapons, public shaming, and bullying online. (Yes, this is about Adria Richards/PyCon, and more.)
