Interesting approach to tackling political corruption -- start small with ballot initiatives.
Solving America’s corruption crisis takes political power. This is how we build it.

Postdoctoral Research Positions in Development of Infants and Children Who Use Cochlear Implants and/or Hearing Aids

A new laboratory (directed by Derek Houston) at The Ohio State University College of Medicine is accepting applications for 2-3 postdoctoral research fellowships to start within the next 6-12 months.  The research program’s mission is to investigate language, cognitive, and social development in deaf and hard-of-hearing infants and young children who receive cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. The new laboratory represents a joint effort between The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH to develop a multidisciplinary translational research program that will improve outcomes in children with hearing loss.

Exciting News! A new Babytalk research project has been awarded an IU collaborative research grant!

The project will bring together Babytalk researchers and IU-Bloomington computer/cognitive scientists to apply cutting edge eye tracking and data integration and mining technology to perform fine-grained analyses of communicative interactions between infants with hearing loss and their parents during play sessions and to discover which kinds of communicative interactions are most successful for promoting language development.

We will be recruiting infants and toddlers with and without hearing loss for this project. Stay tuned for more information regarding participation!

Story
Introduction
I'm an associate professor in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the Ohio State University.  I received a PhD in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University with Peter Jusczyk, PhD.  During my graduate training, my research focused on how normal-hearing, typically developing infants segment words from fluent speech and recognize words across different talkers.  In 2000, I constructed the first laboratory to investigate the speech perception and language skills of deaf infants who receive cochlear implants.  Since then, my work has investigated the effects of early auditory deprivation and subsequent cochlear implantation on speech discrimination, attention to speech, sensitivity to language-specific properties of speech, word learning, and general cognitive skills in deaf infants and toddlers. My work has been supported by the NIDCD, the Deafness Research Foundation, and the American Hearing Research Foundation.
