Do you have an alarm clock or an opportunity clock? In other words, do you WANT to wake up and enter the world every day, or do you HAVE to?

For most of us, we start to work around age 15. We work to retirement or age 65. That's 50 years!

On average, people report high degrees of happiness in their late teens and early twenties. But as the years go on, people become more frustrated, drained and unhappy, and many hit rock-bottom in life satisfaction in their 50s. Happiness tends to rebound from there into older age.

Being a kid is great. The weekends are seemingly filled with endless fun and excitement. Fast forward to retirement and life is relaxing and great again. But what about everything in between? The average person works 2,100 hours a year, so you might as well spend this time doing what you love.

While keynoting the recent +Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association annual conference, I was blessed to meet over 300 leaders who are filled with passion and energy and ready to dial into their opportunity clocks!

"Why do we even build and run clubs?"

This was the question I asked myself as I was preparing for my recent Club Managers Association of America presentation.

The answer is simple: To build community. To feel a sense of belonging. To spend time with people.

Every club with dining has food, beverages, tables, linens, and chairs. Every club with a fitness center has bikes, treadmills, and weights.

I've never heard a member come back after his or her vacation and remark, "I really missed you, treadmill!" They miss people -- their friends & familiar faces!

The glue that holds our planet and your organization together is not an app or technology. It’s the power of the human connection. Without it, nothing else matters.

Did you know that data-obsessed +Google measures the length of the cafeteria lines to make sure their employees have to wait and talk to each other (optimally three to four minutes)? Their cafeteria features long tables that are placed a little too close together, so you might hit someone when you push your chair back and unintentionally meet someone new. The employees call this the "Google Bump." Listen to what someone had to say about Google’s nonstop free buffet: "It helps me build relationships with my colleagues." Hold on—food helps build relationships? It can and does when it’s correctly used.

Food for thought: Do you go to networking events to hang out with people you already know?

At my recent Everyone Communicates, Few Connect keynote for the +Wisconsin Credit Union League's Greater Fox City Chapter, we decided to create our own "Credit Union Bump." Was it scary for some at first? Absolutely, but the positive emotion after connecting with new people far outweighed the negatives of any pre-event fear.

Check out this post-event reflection: "I think that bringing people together and asking that they get out of their comfort zone is a great idea! There are so many people who talk about leadership and communication that I think the message gets boring and lost in translation. Bringing in someone who has passion and a different, more energetic approach to showing how communication can change the game. Look at how much energy and laughter was in that room last night, wow!"

How can you create an intentional "bump" in your organization?

While keynoting +Wisconsin Vision's annual managers meeting, we invested considerable time into aligning personal visions with the company's mission of providing SPECtacular team member & customer experienceS [SPECS]. 👓

We created a "Vision Bus." 🚌 I asked the participants, "Will you need help to realize your vision?" To find out, I asked a volunteer to be the driver and share his vision. Then, I asked him to hand-select anyone who he might need to help along the way.

The BIG takeaway -- each and every colleague in the room could help him . . . and each and every colleague in the room could help each other. We walked away literally and figuratively "seeing more life."

Don't go at it alone. Who can help you realize your vision?

THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE EVER RECEIVED: "BE MORE HUMAN."

[Enjoy watching the 108-second video or reading the 7-minute article.]

Think about your last performance evaluation. What sticks in your memory? Do you remember the energizing pluses or the dreaded minuses?

Let’s flash back to 2010 for a moment. It was the day of my annual review as a General Manager of the +Wisconsin Athletic Club. For the first 58 minutes, things were positive and uplifting. I felt confident and on top of my game. For the last 2 minutes, after I expressed a strong desire to be promoted, not so much. My bosses remarked, “If you want to move up in our organization, you need to learn how to be more human.”

Outwardly, I initially acknowledged them by nodding my head and acting as if I understood what they meant. Inwardly, I felt dejected and thought to myself, “What the heck are you talking about? I AM human! Whatever.” It took every ounce of my energy to not get defensive. My blood was boiling, and I wanted to quit...

I hear it all the time during my pre-event preparation ... "I don't have time to connect."

FAKE NEWS: If you want to win, you better go-go-go.

REALITY CHECK: No matter how many apps are downloaded on your phone or how seemingly endless your to-do list might be, our basic needs never change. We need to be appreciated & feel a sense of belonging.

DAILY CHALLENGE: No matter how swamped and busy you are, take 90 seconds to give yourself the gift of a quality interaction... it can be simple ... ask someone's name and where he or she is from, inquire about someone's hobbies, or genuinely thank someone. Really focus on the person and give 100% of your attention, maintain solid eye contact and be present. In other words, slowwwww down your conversations to speed up your relationships.

Kudos to the U.S. Probation Office - Eastern District of Wisconsin for making the time to connect at their recent conference!

While you're thinking about the new week... We all know people who seemingly have it all & are deemed "successful" by their status, job or wealth ... but how to do they feel inside? Are they truly fulfilled and content in their lives? I know many who feel trapped because they are in meetings all day, sleep 4 hours a night, don't see their families or friends, never exercise ... yet they are considered "successful" by many of society's standards. You can be one of the most "successful" people & still feel miserable and unfulfilled.

Are you pursuing a life of success? If so, make sure YOU are writing your OWN definition of it, not your boss or someone else, just YOU. Is it personal achievement, helping others, having those closest to you love and respect you, or something else? Write it down ✍️.

Now, think about one obstacle ⛰️ that is standing in the way between you and your definition of success. What is holding you back? Is it fear, lack of confidence, disorganization, yourself, or something else?

At a recent Milwaukee Business Journal event, I challenged area leaders to be proactive and get serious about moving just one step 🚶🏻 closer to fulfillment. We created personal development plans to tackle to their obstacles. One step leads to another step and so on ... before you know it, you are exactly where YOU want to be.

Yesterday afternoon, I had the chance to speak to all of the interpreters at
+Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) about their own well-being. I specifically challenged them to take 100% responsibility for their ENERGY through the following 5 practices: stress 😩, sleep 💤, food 🥕, exercise 🏃🏿‍♀️, & water 🥤 mindfulness.

Our energy is one of the best “things” that we can share with others. To actively live out MATC's mission of advancing the quality of life for all students, instructors need to be giving of their energy. You cannot give what you do not have.

What is your organization's mission? To fulfill that mission, I'm guessing that you need a team of fully charged 🔋 leaders.

How do YOU manage YOUR energy? Share your best practices in the comments below 👇.

(Check out the group shot of us making the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for a healthy state of well-being.)
