Famous Internet Firsts: Then And Now #Infographic

This infographic from +WebpageFX illustrates a series of famous Internet firsts you may not have known about, including the first spam email, the first item purchased online, and some of the first social media updates. The graphic also shows where these famous firsts are today, and how they’ve grown over the years. Some of the statistics may surprise you!

Some key stats:

• The first spam email was sent by Gary Thuerk in 1978, to 400 people within ARPANET, inviting them to his company's new product demo. Today 54 Billion spam emails are sent daily.

• The first YouTube video was uploaded by Jawed Karim in 2005, which has been viewed more than 16 million times. And now, we watch 6 Billion hours of video each month.

• The first user to join Facebook in 2004 was Arie Hasit, today there are more than 1.3 Billion monthly active users, 1.1 billion of them on mobile.

Don't Use PBNs for either Content or Link Spam

Too many dentists never bother asking their website company exactly WHAT they're doing to improve their Google rankings.  Far too often, less reputable companies will use link farms, Private Blog Networks, etc as black hat SEO techniques.  While these techniques can create short-term gains, when Google decides to crack down on them, your website could not only drop in rankings, it could be de-indexed completely. That means it wouldn't appear in Google at all!

Exciting Changes Ahead!

For a long time, I've wanted to expand and grow the topics that I cover here, but there have long been too many things happening in my life, and not enough time.  Recently, however, the new G+ Primer for Dentists has re-invigorated me and gotten me excited again.  Therefore, we're in the process of re-branding as Digital Dentistry Inc, and we'll be coving a lot more topics than just digital photography.  In fact, a whole new website may be required, but that's still a little bit off.

Still, as part of the effort to grow the message and audience, and to let people know that we cover a lot more information than just digital photography, a new logo and theme was really needed.  For that, I turned to +Ryan J. Rhoades  of +Reformation Designs , and as you can see, a lot has changed!

I'm really excited about the new logo and goals for the website and associated social media pages, although a lot of work lies ahead.  But with the terrific work that Ryan has done, we have a great start.

I highly recommend Ryan if you need graphic design work.  He's very responsive, a great guy, lots of good ideas, a phenomenal portfolio, and was a pleasure to work with.  Give him a call if you're in need.

Need Infographics and Images for Social Media and Websites?  Try +Canva 

As much as I love +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and +Adobe Photoshop , there are times I just want something quick and easy, and over the last 6 months, I've found +Canva to be the perfect tool. 

There are certainly other options, such as PicMonkey, but having a fair amount of experience with Canva, that's just my personal recommendation.  :-)

Don't Cheat.  Just Don't.  Ignore Anyone Who Says Otherwise

In a FB marketing group for dentists today, a question was posted by someone in attendance at a social media marketing seminar.  The speaker in this seminar was actually promoting the idea of buying FB Likes, Google+ plus ones, etc. through Fiverr, and the attendee was a little suspicious of the idea of buying Likes.  And rightly so!

This evening, I'm beginning my occasional series of videos that will cover topics like these, having to do with Social Media Marketing, SEO, Website design and content, etc.  I welcome your questions and comments, and of course, please Share if you found this information useful.  :-)

This video is in response to a question that was asked in a private Facebook dental marketing group: "Should I use fiverr to buy likes for my Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. Pages for my dental practice?"

The answer should be clear, but the person asking was actually at a social media seminar, where this was being promoted as the way to get more subscribers.  Let me tell you why that's wrong.

+David Amerland I guess  that I shouldn't be surprised at these questions, because until I really started learning SEO and social media for myself, rather than relying on "dental experts," who often had little real-life experience with it outside dentistry, I had many of the same questions.

G+ Primer for Dentists #2: +martin shervington and +Plus Your Business!  to Boost Engagement

I"m very excited to host the amazing Martin Shervington in Episode 2 of the  *G+ Primer for Dentists Hangout on Air* this Saturday, Sept. 13th at 1pm.  Having recently graduated from the Level 2 Trailblazers as a Founding Member, I can attest to the depth of Martin's knowledge when it comes to all things Google+.  Using what I learned from Martin has been really important in taking my Google+ Local Page +Smiles by Payet Family Dentistry from just 132 Followers back in March 2014, to more than 500 Followers today, and we're still growing - all without paying a penny for ads, etc.

Google+ can be a great extension of your marketing efforts, but quite honestly, most dentists here are doing it all wrong, which is why you see your own posts with little-to-no actual engagement, i.e. +1s, comments, or shares, and therefore no real effect on Search results.

I promise - the ONLY way you'll come away from this even with AT LEAST 5-10 actionable things to start right away, is if you don't attend or don't listen.

Introduction
Dental Digital Photography is the website and blog of Charlotte NC dentist Dr. Charles Payet, whose biggest passion after his family and dentistry is photography.

Digital photography has transformed the way dentists communicate - with their patients, with their labs, in their marketing (printed and the Web), with their staff, and has become a critical part of dentistry.  However, it's not an easy art to master.

While there are numerous DVD's, tutorials, etc. that will teach you how to take photos, there are very few that also teach you what to do with your photos after they're taken.  Things like:
  • How to store and catalog your photos
  • Do you use your Practice Management Software or a dedicated software program?
  • What kind of editing is OK and what isn't?
  • Do you have a workflow that makes it easy and fast to put photos on your Facebook Fan Page, your website, Google+, or more?
These are the questions that prevent many dentists from using digital photography to the maximum extent in their practices, and these are what I am to teach.
