I have an issue in my network that I get really high pings (500ms+). This is normal because my brother is uploading a file (video) to youtube or a friend using skype and its using our maximum throughput that leads finally to this high ping. Playing an fps multiplayer with a 500ms ping is so a pain in the ass. I know and understand completely why this is happening, so lets see how I can limit it.
I've setup a TomatoUSB on a Netgear Router and using this already several years. Once I've setuped QOS but the throughput for normal using was terrible. This is my main issue, I don't know exactly how I should configure it.
We've cable internet with 20Mbit/s down and 2Mbit/s up. Many systems in the network (pcs and consoles) are used to play games. I don't want to make a difference between systems, including mine, and everyone needs to follow the same rules. There's no special requirement on packet type (audio, video) and so on, I'm thinking of a general limitation no matter what packet it is.
The attached screenshots are the default values, but I think I don't need to setup every field. It looks like I can leave QOS off and enable the rate/ceiling limit, but what's the meaning/difference of these words in this case? For me it sounds like the same, but it's likely not. I'd like to allow a single component to use 80% download and 80% upload bandwith maximum. But these are my theoretical values with no experience if this is working as expected.
