Those of us in recovery know early on that anger and negative emotions often trigger relapse. One of the first things we learn is to be more mindful of what we are feeling and then learn to manage the feelings in a more healthy way. As we build a foundation of recovery, it becomes essential that we learn to identify right away what we are feeling and the attendant thoughts that have triggered those feelings. You’ve done the difficult work of getting sober. You’ve earned the right to be proud and to celebrate the courage and determination that got you here. But as anyone experienced in this journey can tell you, the next phase of recovery, avoiding the temptation to relapse, can be just as challenging.

Anger and substance abuse are often tightly intertwined. Addicts use drugs and alcohol to cope with anger (and the uncomfortable feelings anger masks). Those same substances can exacerbate the anger, making the temptation to abuse even greater. It’s a vicious cycle. That’s why anger management is a prerequisite to getting and staying clean and sober — and vice versa.

Break the anger cycle. Call Delray Beach IOP 800-767-1568.

As females in the throes of using, we invariably overlook eating as well as other fundamentally necessary habits, which would contribute to self-preservation. Oftentimes we loose our monthly period, and regain it in early recovery. For a woman who’s been using or drinking for many years, the first sober encounter with a nasty bout of PMS can be intense. Being sober during PMS is like putting a magnifying glass on issues, because they are not cushioned by alcohol. It is like experiencing them for the first time. ...

As we start a new life without drink and drugs we usually feel very vulnerable and raw. Without self-medicating, our emotions rise to the surface and it is a totally new experience to encounter, process and actually feel those emotions. If we are willing, we can change the way we interact with the world and the way we see ourselves in it.

It is possible to buy into the illusion that external success is a measure of our recovery, but this is not the case, and we know it. How many times have we tried to dress up our misery with beads and baubles? Visited a casino looking for thrills, or visited porn sites seeking satisfaction? Or alternatively have bought something believing it will make us feel better only to realize that it doesn’t work and the emptiness is there still? How many times have we tried to stuff our feeling through eating, literally trying to fill an endless void? Human nature can account for this existential dilemma to a degree, but we are people who know, on a certain level that there is never enough. Our highly refined secret friend can transform and appears in many disguises. So what are we to do?
