Topic of the Day: Decalcification!!!

~What Causes Decalcification?~
It's a common legend that braces can cause these spots to appear, but in reality they are the result of plaque buildup just like any other form of tooth decay.Although braces are not directly responsible for causing these white spots to form on your teeth, they can complicate the process of plaque removal, the culprit! Decalcification most commonly affects the region between the gums and the brackets where plaque is most difficult to remove. Here at Delio Orthodontics, we are happy to equip you with the proper tools and knowledge needed to keep your teeth healthy and spot-free while your smile is being reshaped! Getting your braces off should be nothing less than a moment of excitement and joy.

~How do You Avoid Decalcification?~
The best way to prevent decalcification is to keep your teeth clean of plaque. This can be done most effectively if you use a tooth brush specifically multiple times a day and floss regularly. The plaque that builds up on the surfaces and between your teeth creates acids which deplete your tooth’s enamel of minerals over time. When you brush, be sure to focus on the areas that are obstructed by your brackets and wires, and pay attention to when we instruct you on how to floss with braces. It’s also important to stay away from sodas and other foods that are high in sugar and acid, as these build plaque fast

"The Truth About Headgear"
We've all seen those movies with characters looking silly wearing an orthodontic headgear appliance. For example, Darla from the Disney movie "Finding Nemo". These representations do exaggerate on what headgear looks like and when to wear it. If a headgear is prescribed for treatment DO NOT FREAK OUT! We promise you are not the only person wearing a headgear appliance. A headgear is most commonly used to treat patients with an overbite. An overbite is when the upper arch extends over the of the lower arch too much. When you are young, headgear and rubber bands are THE BEST way to treat an overbite. Without these appliances, it is nearly impossible to get the best final results when your orthodontic treatment is over. That's why it is important to see an orthodontist prior to your late teenage years so that there will be time to catch an overbite and begin correction as soon as possible for the best achievable end result. When receiving a headgear, we will go over detailed instructions and how it's to be worn. We like to think of headgear as homework; the more you study, the better you will do on a test. Same with headgear; the more it is worn, the better off your bite will be and the more you'll thank us in the end. It's hard work but it's totally worth it!

Adult Orthodontics has been growing over the years and now lots of people are jumping on the bandwagon! When treating adult patients there are some things we want you to be prepared for when deciding to be an adult brace face!

1.) Make time for checkups. We usually see people every 3-5 weeks. We understand sometimes life gets very busy, but they have to be willing to come and make it to appointments.
2.) Watch what you eat. It's important to be really careful around hard or sticky foods so you don't break off the brackets.
3.) Brush and floss longer than before. Hygiene is going to be more difficult with the appliances on their teeth,

If you or someone you know is interested in adult orthodontics or has questions about pursuing braces call today and we can answer your questions and schedule you for our complementary exam!
