Elizabeth Hamilton, wife of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, “is deserving
of a musical of her own,” says Smithsonian magazine. She helped him draft his
political essays, raised their eight children, preserved his papers, and co-founded
a private orphanage that still thrives today as a large family services agency.

Elizabeth Schulyer Hamilton (1757–1854) died at age 97, having outlived her famous husband—after his death in a duel with Aaron Burr—by 50 years. Pretty, bright Elizabeth had met Alexander Hamilton when his was chief aide to General George Washington.

During their marriage, Elizabeth served as an intermediary between Alexander and his publisher when he was writing the Federalist Papers, and she worked with him on Washington’s Farewell Address. She endured several tragedies, including the death of their son Philip; the severe mental breakdown of their daughter Angelica; the public, year-long affair of her husband (they later reconciled); and many years of financial troubles.

After Alexander’s death, Elizabeth co-founded the Orphan Asylum Society and served as one of its directors for 42 years. The orphanage raised funds, collected donated goods, and supervised the care and education of over 765 children. The orphanage eventually evolved into a family services agency called Graham Windham, which today serves thousands of children and families each year.

Elizabeth also worked tirelessly for 50 years to collect and preserve her husband’s papers and political legacy. Without her work, says Ron Chernow, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller on which the “Hamilton” musical is based, the book and Broadway hit would have been impossible to create. Elizabeth’s own legacy as a “Founding Mother”—her children, her orphanage, and her preservation of her husband’s papers—is a significant, enduring contribution to American society.
