I'm now back from an inspiring weekend spent at a community project in LebensGut Landwirtschaft, Austria, with the GROW Observatory, a European Horizon 2020 funded #citizenscience #climatechange project. Joanne Butler in Donegal, and I (in the south east of Ireland) are the GROW champions for Ireland, one of nine GROW Places in Europe who are encouraging people with land to place soil moisture monitors every 20 to 30 meters apart, so that European scientists can validate the European Space Agency Sentinal 1 satellite.

Amongst many other things, this vital project will help inform and provide climate change scientists and policy makers, and anyone else who can use the open sourced data in Europe, with solid facts. This will enable us to work together to be ready for the challenges that face growers on our changing planet.

GROW Observatory also provide free global MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) to help anyone who signs up for them to better understand their soil and landscape. They are also growing an online plant database that growers can contribute to. If you'd like to get involved or know anyone who might, contact me or email Community Gardens Ireland info@cgireland.org for more information.
