If you live in California and shop online, you might have noticed that you started paying sales tax on Amazon.com orders starting over the weekend. 

Well, sort of. It turns out that hundreds of thousands of items sold on and shipped by Amazon.com -- the ones that are fulfilled by Amazon.com -- are not being taxed at checkout:

This has not exactly been applauded by California's tax collectors in Sacramento, who say they have plans to collect what's owed them (collecting sales taxes from businesses is easier than collecting use taxes from individuals). I wrote about that in a CNET piece here:
