Thanks for your review, sdicristofaro of #Larchmont  !  Much appreciated--

Debra was incredibly helpful, professional and clearly experienced in the use and interactions of color and light. I have a new home in all "contractor white" and she helped to guide me through the 90% of rooms which needed to be painted based on the space, light, and feeling I wished to convey. She is knowledgeable, efficient and so pleasant to have in my home. With her recommendations (and a good painter ready to go), I was able to get the entire home painted within a few weeks and am VERY happy with the results! Paint really can change the entire character of a space... The house I already loved feels more like a home now. Thank you Debra!

Thank you so much, sdicristofaro. I truly enjoyed the project, and working with you (and your sweet little helpers). And you taught me something new about iridescent paint :) Happy New Year!

Debra Kling Colour Consultant in the New York Times: What is the Best Shade of White to Use When Selling a Home?

“Today, people prefer clean-looking whites,” said Debra Kling, a color consultant in Larchmont, N.Y. “Those colors skew to the gray side, as opposed to the yellow side. They’re cool whites, and very clean and crisp.”

I hired Debra Kling on an hourly consultant basis because I admired several stunning fabric and paint color choices she had made in the home of a dear friend of mine. So far Debra has helped me 1) choose paint colors for my living room, dining room, hallway, study and master bedroom 2) select wallpaper for a bathroom 3) select four new armchairs, two new end tables, two throw pillows and a large oriental rug for my bright new living room 4) design an area rug for the guest bedroom 5) select a mirror for the entryway 6) select carpeting for the stairs and upstairs hallway. Before working with Debra I had never worked with a designer. Debra was flexible, professional, focused, instructive and enormously helpful to me. She used our time together efficiently and worked diligently with many of the preexisting elements in my home--artwork, draperies, beloved furniture--to create genuinely beautiful rooms, one after another. The transformation in our home is dramatic--from quite traditional dark navy blues and forest greens to subtle sophisticated golden greens and silver grays. I am delighted with my newly luminous home and our work together.

Debra was immensely helpful to me for both interior and exterior colors. I had a pretty good idea of what colors we wanted, but I did not know how a 2-inch-square sample would translate to a wall or to an exterior color. Debra clearly has a vast and deep understanding of how light and context affects the color we ultimately see. My husband and I wanted to paint our mid-century modern house in white, which would seem simple enough. As we found out, however, every “white” has hints of another color (slightly blue, beige, pink, green, etc). Debra helped us find the “white” which would actually look like white given how our trees would affect the light on our exterior. As for interior color, we had very particular ideas about which colors we wanted to use. Yet again, Debra helped us to chose paint color that would look the way that we wanted. Debra also is a master in making the most of the natural light in a room. Her fees were modest and reasonable. She was prompt in replying to pleas for color help. She spent a generous amount of time talking with us about paint choices. And, she was a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend her.

I suspect that Debra is used to last minute "color panic" because she responded to my SOS call for help quickly and calmly. I recently bought a new place and every single inch needed paint, as it had not been touched in 25 years. Debra came over and assessed the project, the light, our lifestyle--and me. Over the course of several visits she developed a complete plan for the painters that left me happy and confident that my new home would turn into what I hoped it would be. She dealt so professionally with the challenges thrown at her--an indecisive client, an open plan space, a serious lack of natural light, and unusual ceiling angles. She has the ability to understand the look you're after even when it's just a vague idea in your head. She then translates your ideas into a concrete action plan. People often see a room color in a magazine or on a website and think that by specifying that particular paint hue, they'll get the result they saw and admired. Nothing is further from the truth! In order to get the result you're after, you need someone like Debra who knows how to translate what you see in a photograph into the actual paint color you need to specify for your own walls in your own lighting conditions. Debra is also adept at taking your emotional temperature--will you really be happy with that trendy gray you so admire on Houzz? Debra's deft hand allowed me to confidently specify not only color but finish, an important part of achieving an overall look. Toward the end, I was under time pressure, but Debra rose to the occasion and met all our deadlines. The paint is going up on 3500 square feet as I write, and each space being painted feels like a little gift of light and color. The drop cloths are still down but I already see my house coming to life, just as I imagined it, thanks to Debra's trained and discerning eye.

I highly recommend Debra Kling. She was a pleasure to work with and my husband and I are very pleased with the result. After painting the entire exterior of our home the wrong color, (a light grey that actually looked baby blue at certain times of the day) we contacted Debra to help correct our very expensive mistake. On her first visit, she knew immediately what had gone wrong in our color selection. Debra is very knowledgeable - not just about color selection- but also about how different surfaces will absorb or reflect light. Debra suggested a whole different direction in color palette and it has made a tremendous difference in the look of our home. She not only suggested paint colors -including trim, deck, railings, door etc – she also advised us on outdoor lighting choices. As for the cost of hiring a color consultant – it is well worth the price. Had we hired Debra before we painted the first time, we would have saved several thousand dollars.

I have worked with Debra for several months now, starting when I was completely overwhelmed with selecting countertops and backsplash for my new kitchen, and more recently on a completely renovated bathroom. From the beginning, Debra helped me crystalize my vision for the kitchen and bathroom renovations and then kept me focused on selecting materials and designs that supported that vision. Debra is the consummate professional in every way. She is incredibly responsive and has the ability to quickly assess what is needed and provide support in finding the right fixtures, colors and materials. Debra is sensitive to my personal tastes but she is honest about what she believes will work and what won't. She has a beautiful aesthetic and wonderful ideas, which she keeps aligned with my budget. Debra is also a pleasure to work with; she is a lovely person who is always willing to help, no matter how small the detail or question. I look forward to continuing partnering with Debra to finish my bathroom and hope to work with her on future projects as well!

I hired Debra for a color consultation and general decorating advice to the colors. We chose colors for furniture, paint, pictures, and other elements of the apartment. It was a small job and she treated me as important as any other client. Debra joined me at a rug store to pick out a nice rug and a design store to order custom sofa. She assisted in picking a fabric that worked with the palette that we had chosen. One of the things that I immediately liked was that Debra was able to correctly assess the scope of the work and give it the proper direction. Neither getting too mired in unimportant details nor making too hasty decisions with costly pieces, she had solid advice and direction. I found Debra to have a wonderful work ethic , good personality to work with and very knowledgeable in her area. I managed a renovation on my own apartment, and have worked with a lot of contractors. Debra is top notch and I will continue to use her services as well as recommend her to anyone ! Thanks Deb, Jeremy Baker

Several months ago, with a baby on the way, I decided to move forward with something which I've never done in my entire life......repaint the entire interior of my home. I knew that this would be a daunting task and wasn't quite sure how to move forward so I decided to visit my local paint stores to get their thoughts. They handed me a color wheel with many hundreds of different colors, as if that was going to help me in this process. What it did was exactly the opposite, though, as I began to feel quite overwhelmed. I also spoke to the color consultants in these stores but didn't find them helpful. So, one day I decided to Google "color consultant" and happened to find Debra Kling's profile on another website along with the positive reviews from her prior clients. After meeting Debra, I found her to be very nice, personable and easy to work with. I also found that she had very thoughtful and insightful comments relating to my apartment as well as the colors which would likely work better in this space. Over the following couple of weeks, she suggested colors for each area of my apartment based on what she felt would look good combined with the "look" I was hoping to create. I found her tastes to be impeccable and she was also always very open to hearing my opinions as well. She was also always available in case I had additional questions I wanted to ask her. Also, once the colors were finalized, she summarized all of the color, paint type, etc information which she then forwarded to my painter. To summarize, I am very happy with Debra's work relating to the repainting of my apartment and would highly recommend her to anyone in need of a color consultant.

Debra guided us through every detail of the redesign of our kitchen and powder room - and I when I say, "guided", I mean it in earnest. Any and every time we called on her to help us select a floor tile, a backsplash, the cabinet color, and everything else that accompanies rebuilding a kitchen and powder room from its studs on up. We LOVE our new kitchen despite how hesitant we were to order cabinets in a painted finish we loved - but had never seen anywhere. She even helped me select the wallpaper for our new powder room. We are now in the process of asking for her help in painting the entire interior of our home as well as the exterior. Her design and color sense really resonated with us and we came to trust her judgement in every decision. We highly recommend Debra for any color/interior design work - you will be amazed at your delight with her advice and help as you stand back and look at your home. Thank you Debra!
