Two years and two months in, we're finally getting close to finishing the first draft of the first act in the musical. During this time, there's been a lot of ups, downs, head-desking and rewriting of rewritten rewrites while one or both of us have changed jobs (multiple times) and moved (multiple times).

Now it's time for a read through of everything we've written so far! Come and join us for a living room reading over pizza and drinks.

Hi all. I've been taking a little bit of a break from straight songwriting to study some other forms of creative writing (most recently screenwriting), and I came across this very interesting breakdown of Taylor Swift's "Begin Again" song, using the typical beat structure for a movie.

It's a fascinating analysis of what makes that song work and dovetails nicely with the box structure that Pat teaches in his course. I almost am finding it more helpful to reference screenwriting and dramatic writing techniques to build out the boxes because it gives a little more detail on how to build out those boxes than just having 3 boxes in isolation.

Hope you all find this interesting reading as well!

A short video I recorded about my piece, "Revolver", which is going to be premiered this Friday at the Composers Collective 2015 Winter Showcase, which is part of the 2015 Composers Now Festival in New York (http://www.composersnow.org/cn/schedule/2015_winter_showcase_concert/). Recordings of the piece to come next week!

+Guy Kawasaki speaks truth when he says these ground rules are applicable to any field. When I think of how many horrid slide decks I see at work...

So it's been a while since I've blogged. But since I have the luxury of a four-day Thanksgiving weekend and I did get some amazing footage of my piece being performed two weeks ago as part of the Composers Collective Fall concert, I had no excuses to not catch up!

Check out the post if you're interested in the story behind the song and taking a look at the score, or you can just jump straight to recording:

If you've been curious as to what else has been taking up my time (besides work, and writing a show, and moving around, etc), check out this latest post which reflects back on the first season of the NYC based Composers' Collective.
