We have been mentioned in the "Best for documentation" section of this article comparing Linux Distributions: “we have to give a mention to the separate Debian Administrator’s Handbook (http://debian-handbook.info). This is exactly what we’re looking for as end users and admins: everything you might need, in one place.”

It's always nice to see our work praised :-)
We're going to get a lot of flak for writing these words, but we're not scared – Linux Voice drops ice cubes down the vest of fear. So here we go: you might be using the wrong Linux distribution. Or to put it more diplomatically, you might not be running the distro that's best suited to you.

No summer vacation for us, we're busy updating the book for Debian 7 (aka Wheezy). Have a look at the first chapters that we have put online! Feedback welcome.

The Spanish translation of the Debian Administrator's Handbook is now complete. You can browse it online and it's now available on the usual download page as well... Kudos to the Spanish translation team! It's the first team which has completed their translation of the book. (But the German team is close behind...)
Un libro de referencia que presenta la distribución Debian, desde la instalación incial hasta la configuración de servicios.

Several teams are working hard to translate the Debian Administrator's Handbook in multiple languages and a few have done a big job already. Brazilian Portuguese is at 33%, Italian is at 45%. German is supposed to be at 100% but they haven't committed the result yet, they're working on reviewing their translation first. Keep going! And feel free to join the teams...

Only 9 days left to support the translation of the Debian Administrator's Handbook in Arabic. Check out http://www.zoomaal.com/projects/daftardebian/1492?ref=71926 if an Arabic translation appeals to you! Muhammad Saied has already contributed a lot of text (see http://debian-handbook.info/browse/ar-MA/stable/), thus it would be nice to see this project succeed. Share the link!

Ladies and gentlemen, we're pleased to announce that we completed the French translation and that the book is already available in bookstores (Cahier de l'Admin Debian Wheezy, published by Eyrolles). And the Spanish translation has also been completed! Enjoy.

Is it strange that the first thing that I looked for was whether the cover image is duplicated again on the book on the cover of the book in the cover?

It seems it's not the same desktop, shame. :P

Learn more about our plans to liberate the French book which served as a basis to create the Debian Administrator's Handbook and how you can help us to contribute it back as an official French translation.
The crowdunding campaign is over there: http://www.ulule.com/liberation-cahier-admin-debian/

After a few months of break, we must already get back to work on the Debian Handbook... it's time to start to update it for Debian 7.0 Wheezy. This blog article explains how we're going to do it and how you can help! Check it out.

The book is now also available on Amazon's Kindle, Kobo and Apple's iTunes. It's just some supplementary ways to support the project for people who own e-book readers of those vendors.

Debian Wheezy From Discovery To Mastery
Introduction

Accessible to all, this book teaches the essentials to anyone who wants to become an effective and independent Debian GNU/Linux administrator.

It covers all the topics that a competent Linux administrator should master, from the installation and the update of the system, up to the creation of packages and the compilation of the kernel, but also monitoring, backup and migration, without forgetting advanced topics like SELinux setup to secure services, automated installations, or virtualization with Xen, KVM or LXC.

Written by two Debian developers—Raphaël Hertzog and Roland Mas—it's a fantastic resource for all users of a Debian-based distribution.

The first half of the book covers topics relevant for any Debian user:

  • how the Debian project works and the various distributions that it offers;
  • how to effectively use the packaging system and the associated tools (dpkg, APT, …);
  • how to install Debian with debian-installer;
  • how to find the required documentation/help;
  • how to setup new services;
  • how to solve the problems that you might encounter;

The second half of the book concerns system administrators who have to setup and manage a Debian server, or a large set of desktop machines. You’ll learn:

  • how to configure all the most common services (Apache, Postfix, OpenLDAP, Samba, NFS, …)
  • how to setup virtual machines with KVM/Xen/LXC
  • how to secure your server
  • how to automatize installations with FAI/d-i/simple-cdd
  • how to manage your storage with LVM and RAID
  • etc.
