Some people think short = easy when it comes to writing picture books. My thoughts: http://inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2015/4/22/its-easy-to-write-a-picture-book-its-much-harder-to-write-a.html

Working on an original piece to contribute to the special Judy Blume section of BEA's Children's Book Art Silent Auction this year. I'm using ink and watercolor (Derwent Inktense blocks) on Arches watercolor paper, and the piece is based on the illustration I did for the Atheneum/S&S version of FRECKLE JUICE that came out last year.

The Annual Children's Book Art Silent Auction at Book Expo America is presented by the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFE), the ABC Children's Group at the American Booksellers Association and Random House Children's Books, and part of this year's auction will honor Judy Blume, who is both a truth-teller and a defender of young people's right to read.

The Children's Art Auction supports the ongoing defense of the free speech rights of kids. Hundreds of books are challenged in schools and libraries every year. The auction helps fund the Kids' Right To Read Projected, founded by ABFE and the National Coalition Against Censorship, and Banned Books Week.

A worthy cause.
At first glance, I thought the kid was painting the brush, all Escher-like.

Delighted to have Jane Yolen and Heidi Stemple visit Inkygirl.com today! I'm a longtime fan of Jane's work, especially of her fairy tale retellings. I am embarrassed to admit that I only clued into the fact Heidi was Jane's daughter a few months ago; I just thought they were good friends! In my defense, they DO seem to be good friends. :-)

Anyway, they answered Three Questions for me, which were (1) Could you please take a photo of something in your office and tell us the story behind it? (2) What advice do you have for young writers, and (3) What are you excited about right now?

It's more like, "The first step, is admitting you have, a problem." ;-) That kind of stuff grates on me when I see it.

I'll be interviewing Pat tomorrow!

Happy Book Birthday to PUNCH LIKE A GIRL by my friend +Karen Krossing, out from Orca today! Can't wait to read this.

More info about the book, including a link to Quill & Quire article "A Delicate Balance: taking on the tough issues in YA fiction" which discusses Karen's book: http://karenkrossing.com/books/punch-like-a-girl/

PUNCH LIKE A GIRL is for ages 12 and up:
"Nobody understands why Tori has suddenly become so moody and violent. When she attacks a stranger in a store, she ends up doing community service at a shelter for victims of domestic violence. There, she bonds with a little girl named Casey, but when Casey is abducted while in Tori’s care, Tori is racked with guilt, certain that she should have been able to prevent the abduction. During the search for Casey, Tori comes face to face with an ex-boyfriend who sexually assaulted her at a party. Only when she speaks out about the assault is she able to begin to heal."

Kalendar is one of my favorite brunch places in Toronto (I reviewed the place for blogTO years ago). Food is excellent, though wait times can sometimes be long. Despite being one of the first customers to arrive this morning (Sunday), for example, it took nearly an hour to get our food. After we inquired twice, another staff member apologized and said they had a new omelette chef, offered us free mimosas.
