Very excited about the launch of the first MITZI TULANE, PRESCHOOL DETECTIVE book this summer, a new picture book written by Lauren McLaughlin and illustrated by yours truly, published by Random House Children's Books July 12, 2016. Lauren was kind enough to answer some questions about her process, publication journey and inspiration:

http://debbieohi.com/lauren-mclaughlin/

Before writing the MITZI TULANE picture books, Lauren worked as a screenwriter (Hypercube, Prisoner of Love, Specimen) and producer (American Psycho, Buffalo ’66, Vig, Stag, and others) in the film business and has also written several teen novels (Cycler, (Re)Cycler, and Scored). Fascinating to read about her writing and editing process, inspiration, comparison of writing picture books to YA, and her advice for young writers.

I did that with Dewey just because I wanted to get the crying when he died over with quickly. That may not count, though, since it's non-fiction.

So I was just going to read the first few pages of +Arthur Slade Slade's new middle grade novel (launching this April) FLICKERS this morning to get a taste of what the book was like but then I COULDN'T STOP READING AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. Finished it just now.

Wow. Such a good read.

SoOOoooOOoooOOooo deliciously creepy and dark (I'm a fan of horror MG). Love how the mystery gradually unfolds, and the plot twists along the way. Love the relationship between the sisters. I just loveloveLOVED this book.

If I have nightmares tonight, I am SO going to blame Arthur Slade. I'm also looking forward to rereading the book when it comes out on April 26th this year from HarperCollins Canada! More info about the book: http://www.harpercollins.ca/9781443416658/flickers. More about Arthur and his work: http://arthurslade.com

To agents, editors and art directors out there: Please take a few minutes to answer this short, anonymous poll to help up-and-coming writers and illustrators?
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6F8NVTJ

Results will be discussed at the Florida SCBWI Regional Conference, SCBWI MetroNY Feb event and SCBWI-LA Writer's Day as well as summarized in Inkygirl.com later this year.

For editors and art directors, I'm looking for those who are involved in the decision-making process re: book contracts or initial talent-scouting. Thank you SO MUCH!

This illustration is dedicated to teacher-librarian +Debbie Alvarez, who told me how much she loved the way I could see the beauty in ordinary things. In the background: a photo I took in a drive-through car wash.

In the foreground: Debbie, who was anything but ordinary.

See http://inkygirl.com/debbie-alvarez for my post about Debbie, who passed away on Monday after a long battle with cancer.

Thanks to those who answered my Inkygirl.com survey! Of those who responded via my poll link, a whopping 60% of you say you've skipped ahead to the ending while reading a book. Some of you say you ALWAYS do it. For reasons why, see:
http://inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2016/2/3/poll-results-60-of-you-skip-ahead-to-read-the-ending-of-a-bo.html

Two of my favourite comments:

"Because I needed to prepare myself if Harry, Ron, or Hermione died!"

"I am, at my basest levels, an impatient cheat."

To my Google+ friends who work in the entertainment industry (TV, movies, radio, screenwriting etc.), especially those in the Toronto area: My niece is currently seeking a job that will help her achieve her screenwriting and acting career goals, including entry-level positions that put her in daily contact with those in the industry. She currently lives in Toronto but is also open to opportunities in New York and Los Angeles.

My niece is one of the most organized, hardest-working, self-motivated and enthusiastic young people I've ever known. Even if I wasn't her aunt, I would still want to work with her; as I mention in the link below, Sara and I have already collaborated on some creative projects.

*****For more info, please read my post:

And THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance!!

Thanks to Megan Maynor for answering Three Questions for me on Inkygirl today! Read her inspiring advice for young writers: http://inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2016/1/25/advice-for-young-writers-patience-ella-and-penguin-stick-tog.html

Megan's debut picture book ELLA AND PENGUIN STICK TOGETHER just came out from HarperCollins Children's Books and is such a fun read! http://www.meganmaynor.com/new-page-1/

"Ella and Penguin want to see their new glow-in-the-dark stickers glow—but they don't want to go into the dark. (It’s so dark!) Can they see the stickers glow another way? Can they face the dark closet if they stick together?"

I am TOTALLY THRILLED to visit +Julie Danielson's Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast blog today. I've been a fan of both Jules and her blog for years, so am blown away both by the hono(u)r and all the work she put into this interview: http://blaine.org/sevenimpossiblethings/?p=3971#more-3971

This post includes material and Secret Facts I have not shared publicly before, plus an embarrassing childhood comic, peek into my process for Judy Blume and Michael Ian Black book illustrations as well as my solo picture book Where Are My Books?, my journey to publication, covers for upcoming picture books written by Lauren McLaughlin and Rob Sanders, original art by my Simon & Schuster editor Justin Chanda, my office, a picture book I'd like to write and illustrate someday, the three author/illustrators I'd love to have coffee with someday, listening to Ookla the Mok and Jodi Krangle and Chris Conway, the real reason I've been avoiding public speaking until recently, and MUCH MORE.

Thank you so much to Julie Danielson for having me over for breakfast!

Kalendar is one of my favorite brunch places in Toronto (I reviewed the place for blogTO years ago). Food is excellent, though wait times can sometimes be long. Despite being one of the first customers to arrive this morning (Sunday), for example, it took nearly an hour to get our food. After we inquired twice, another staff member apologized and said they had a new omelette chef, offered us free mimosas.
