Yeah, well. Since I have to miss #LA15SCBWI in Los Angeles this year, I figure I may as well get a comic strip out of it. :-)

I discovered that the antibiotic drops I was taking for pink eye made them much worse RIGHT before I was supposed to leave for LA. So I had a choice: to go anyway, or to cancel and see a doctor instead, just in case there was a more serious condition or at the very least to get other medication. I opted for the latter.

I'm relieved it's just pink eye and nothing serious, but a bit frustrated with timing.

Ah well. I look forward to seeing people's #LA15SCBWI tweets and photos!

I've been gradually working my way through each of these panels in my own career, so figured it was about time to repost this comic. :-)

You never know where you'll find a book fairy.

This bunch of hydrangea was too big to incorporate into a regular found object doodle, so I decided to put a doodle in the hydrangea instead. smile emoticon If you like garden doodles, do check out Priscilla Burris's Instagram feed (https://instagram.com/priscilladesign/). Her art is adorable and always makes me happy!

#BookADay: FERAL NIGHTS (Book #1 in Feral series) by Cynthia Leitich Smith , my Curtis Brown, Ltd. agency sister (book published by Candlewick). A perfect summer YA read! Love the tongue-in-cheek humor, fun banter between quirky characters, plots twists. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Synopsis: "When Yoshi, a sexy, free-spirited werecat, tracks his big sister, Ruby, to Austin, he discovers that she's not only MIA; she's also the key suspect in a murder investigation. Meanwhile, sarcastic werepossum Clyde and his human pal Aimee have set out to do a little detective work of their own, sworn to avenge the brutal killing of a friend.

When all three are snared in an underground kidnapping ring, they end up on a remote tropical island ruled by an unusual (even by shape-shifter standards) species. The island harbors a grim secret, and were-predator and were-prey must join forces in a fight to escape alive.

Fans of best-selling author Cynthia Leitich Smith's Tantalize quartet will thrill to see favorite sidekick characters—together with all-new ones—take the fore in this wry, high-action entry in an exciting new series."

Had a great time playtesting one of Eric Lang's new games tonight along with Les & Laurie Cheung and Jeff. Thanks so much to Sonja Lang for the lovely dinner and the invite! I've always admired Eric Lang as a game designer but even more so, seeing him in creative mode.

I took the photo of Eric while he was making edits to some of the cards in the game we were playtesting. Eric does a TON of playtesting of his games before submitting them to his publishers, and I've been so impressed by his methodology as well as commitment to the core goal of making the game FUN TO PLAY.

You can find out more about Eric and his work:

It's easy to write a children's book. The real challenge: writing a book that people actually want to READ.

#BookADay: HOW TO OUTRUN A CROCODILE WHEN YOUR SHOES ARE UNTIED by +Jess Keating(Sourcebooks Jabberwocky). If you or your tween is looking for a fun summer read, I strongly recommend this book. Love the funny, fresh voice and quirky humour. Love the poignant moments. Love the fact that Ana's parents are zoologists (Ana is short for Anaconda!) -- the author herself has a zoology background.

I've already bought the next in the series, HOW TO OUTSWIM A SHARK WITHOUT A SNORKEL and also look forward to the release of HOW TO OUTFOX YOUR FRIENDS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE, which comes out in October 2015....and it just got a starred review in Kirkus: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jess-keating/how-outfox-your-friends-when-you-dont-have-clue/

Synopsis of HOW TO OUTRUN A CROCODILE: "Ana Wright's social life is now officially on the endangered list: she lives in a zoo (umm, elephant droppings!?), her best friend lives on the other side of the world, and the Sneerers are making junior high miserable. All Ana wants is to fade into the background.

Yeah, that's not going to happen."

‪#‎BookADay‬: WAIT by Antoinette Portis (Roaring Brook, 2015). LOVE the beautiful simplicity of the story and illustrations. A visual feast! This book received well-deserved starred reviews in Kirkus, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly.

See sample illustrations & more about the book: http://us.macmillan.com/wait-1/antoinetteportis and on Antoinette's site: http://www.antoinetteportis.com/index1.html

Synopsis: "As a boy and his mother move quickly through the city, they're drawn to different things. The boy sees a dog, a butterfly, and a hungry duck while his mother rushes them toward the departing train. It's push and pull, but in the end, they both find something to stop for.

Acclaimed author/illustrator Antoinette Portis' signature style conveys feelings of warmth, curiosity, humor and tenderness in this simple, evocative story."

Thanks to my friend +Maple Lam, who answered Three Questions for me today on Inkygirl.com: http://inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2015/7/23/three-questions-for-maple-lam-advice-for-young-illustrators.html

Maple offers advice for young illustrators, shows us stuff in her office, and is excited about the upcoming SCBWI Summer Conference (next week!!!). Congrats again to Maple on her DEBUT as a children's book illustrator in TWO GIRLS WANT A PUPPY ( HarperCollins Children's Books) , which is also my #bookaday choice today. This new picture book was written by Evie & Ryan Cordell and is inspired by a real-life story (see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2265902/Father-buys-puppy-kids-challenging-1m-likes-Facebook.html) when two sisters were promised a puppy if they could get a million likes for their Twogirlsandapuppy FB page.

Kalendar is one of my favorite brunch places in Toronto (I reviewed the place for blogTO years ago). Food is excellent, though wait times can sometimes be long. Despite being one of the first customers to arrive this morning (Sunday), for example, it took nearly an hour to get our food. After we inquired twice, another staff member apologized and said they had a new omelette chef, offered us free mimosas.
