I cannot resist a middle grade novel with unique/cool technology as a hook, so was intrigued by the basic synopsis of SIX by M.M. Vaughan (Margaret K. McElderry/Simon & Schuster Children's, 2015): Parker and his sister Emma, with the help of secret advanced technology, can communicate between themselves through their thoughts. When their father is kidnapped a few years after their mom's death, Parker and his sister are determined to find him.

Loved the mystery and action in SIX, the unexpected plots twists, and especially liked Parker's sister Emma. While Emma's deafness plays a role in their mystery-solving (she's very good at lipreading, for instance), it's not an Issue. Also loved the humor.

I'd like a SEQUEL, please!

Monica shared some great advice on Chuck Sambuchino's "7 Things I've Learned So Far": http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents/7-things-ive-learned-so-far-by-m-m-vaughan

Debut picture book author and Simon & Schuster Children's editor +Christian Trimmer  offers fantastic advice for young writers, talks about Ben Clanton and his art, and what he's excited about now on Inkygirl.com today: http://inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2015/8/31/three-questions-for-christian-trimmer-advice-for-young-write.html

An aside: Christian just announced that he's acquired another picture book from Eric Fan and Terry Fan. I'm already super-excited about the Fan brothers' THE NIGHT GARDENER (http://books.simonandschuster.com/The-Night-Gardener/Terry-Fan/9781481439787) and am now also hyped about OCEAN MEETS SKY, which launches Summer 2017.

I love Christian's enthusiasm about kidlit/YA on his Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/MisterTrimmer. And again, MEGA-CONGRATS to Christian on his debut as a picture book author!!! SIMON'S NEW BED launched from S&S BFYR on Aug. 25, 2015.

‪#‎BookADay‬: OUTSTANDING IN THE RAIN by Frank Viva (Tundra Books, 2015). Blown away by the amazing die-cut illustrations, and I also loved the wordplay and fun story. Beautifully designed. I met Frank this past summer (thanks, Susan!); SUCH a nice fellow, very modest, incredibly talented.

Frank's first picture book, ALONG A LONG ROAD, was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Illustration and was on The NYTimes 10 Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2011 list.

It's been a while since I've awarded the Incredibly Prestigious and Exquisitely Ephemeral Golden Marmot Award, but this week it NEEDS to go to Chuck Wendig for this wonderful tip about supporting authors.

A few minutes after I tweeted this, Chuck told me how much his son was enjoying reading the Michael Ian Black picture book Naked! that I illustrated. Michael's response was highly amusing. You can read the full thread on Twitter: https://twitter.com/inkyelbows/status/638716076021415937

Posted on Inkygirl about Chuck's tweet and his fantastic blog:

Thanks to those who answered my dog-earing survey! It was fun to see how OPINIONATED many of us are about dog-earing pages in books; non-readers just wouldn't care, would they? Anyway, here's what you said:

A well-worn book is a well-loved book....but some people (hand waving here) still cringe at the idea of dog-earing pages in books. What's YOUR take on dog-earing book pages? Answer this anonymous 1-question poll about if/when you dog-ear pages in books: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/577B558 and you'll see what people have said so far.

‪#‎BookADay‬: Z IS FOR MOOSE by Kelly Bingham and Paul Oh Zelinsky (Greenwillow Books). A hilarious twist on alphabet books. Then you need to check out CIRCLE, SQUARE, MOOSE, which came out in 2014. I love Moose!

Fun book trailer for Z IS FOR MOOSE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP52OtZxPdg

About the book: "Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky illustrates Kelly Bingham's outrageously funny, critically acclaimed, and boundary-breaking story about a moose, a zebra, and the alphabet! Zebra wants to put on a show as simple as ABC, but Zebra's friend Moose has other (unexpected and hilarious) ideas!"

Kalendar is one of my favorite brunch places in Toronto (I reviewed the place for blogTO years ago). Food is excellent, though wait times can sometimes be long. Despite being one of the first customers to arrive this morning (Sunday), for example, it took nearly an hour to get our food. After we inquired twice, another staff member apologized and said they had a new omelette chef, offered us free mimosas.
