Here's the full list of manga we loved (and loathed) at this year's Best & Worst Manga panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012! See our picks and read rants from Shaenon Garrity, Chris Butcher, Carlo Santos, Brigid Alverson & I about 40 new and upcoming releases.

The biggest surprise / most intriguing new manga license announcement at Comic-Con? It wasn't from any of the big guys: it was from Picturebox, who announced that they'll be publishing The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame, the first-ever collection (in English) of bara manga.

Bara manga is manga about men loving men, created for gay men. With its focus on manly, muscular men, bara manga has a distinct style compared with yaoi manga, which is boys love manga, usually written by/for female readers.

With Chip Kidd and Anne Ishii spearheading this effort, i know this book is already on my most anticipated list for 2013. see what the buzz is about here:

Once again, Zac Bertschy invited Ed Sizemore and I for another session of "Super Manga Pals" on Anime News Network's ANNCast!

Listen to us rant about what we're reading fr. Yen Press, Drawn & Quarterly, Digital Manga Inc., Fantagraphics Books Inc., JManga, & VizMedia, get frothy around the mouth about pirate manga apps on the iTunes Store, hear me get pissy about fans who are never, ever happy, what's new on Shonen Jump Alpha, and much, much more.

Here's Part 2 of Making a Living in Manga, in which the collective comics Twitterverse (well, at least the people who followed this discussion) talk about the perception that manga made in america is 'fake' manga, that american manga-ka try too hard to draw 'japanese' stories, and signs that the tides are changing, thanks to a new wave of homegrown boys' love / erotic webcomics.

6 hours to go, and Digital Manga needs to raise $2.5K to publish Triton by Tezuka, along with Unico and Atomcat. They've got some sweet thank you gifts like silkscreened posters and t-shirts to tempt you to dig a little deeper and give a little more, so why give it a go, why don't you?

Poor Kodansha. With only one new license to announce at Comic-Con, they were stuck answering questions from a small group of cranky Sailor Moon fans. here's what happened:

Here's Part 4 of the Making a Living in Manga series that I'm posting on About.com Manga. This article focuses on the roles of publishers, past & present to the current state of "original english language manga" in North America, self-publishing via webcomics and Kickstarter, and the dream held dear by many American manga creators: the thought of going to Japan to make it big as a manga-ka.

Once again, I kicked the hornet's nest on Twitter, when i asked a simple question about a complicated situation: is it possible to make a living creating 'manga' in North America?
