+Amanda Parsons has to see this, being an English major with a Shakespeare specialty and all.

+Shane Martin
And here we'd almost forgotten just how many of Shakespeare's plays end with stabbings.

Intel and several of its partners said they will make 800Gbps cables available in the second half of this year, bringing big speed increases to supercomputers and data centers.

The new cables are based on Intel's Silicon Photonics technology that pushes 25Gbps across each fiber. Last year, Intel demonstrated speeds of 100Gbps in each direction, using eight fibers. A new connector that goes by the name "MXC" holds up to 64 fibers (32 for transmitting and 32 for receiving), enabling a jump to 800Gbps in one direction and 800Gbps in the other, or an aggregate of "1.6Tbps" as Intel prefers to call it. (In case you're wondering, MXC is not an acronym for anything.)

The largest clinical study ever conducted to date of patients with advanced leukemia found that 88 percent achieved complete remissions after being treated with genetically modified versions of their own immune cells. "These extraordinary results demonstrate that cell therapy is a powerful treatment for patients who have exhausted all conventional therapies," said a senior author. "Our initial findings have held up in a larger cohort of patients, and we are already looking at new clinical studies to advance this novel therapeutic approach in fighting cancer."

In the body, sugar is converted into energy in a process called metabolism, which decomposes sugar into carbon dioxide and water while releasing electrons. Biobatteries produce energy though the same conversion process by capturing the electrons that are generated in the decomposition of sugar with the same tools that the body uses. Because biobatteries use materials that are biologically based, they are renewable and non-toxic, making them an attractive alternative to traditional batteries that need metals and chemicals to operate.

Google joins the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health
Posted by +Jonathan Bingham, Product Manager

Generating research data is easier than ever before, but interpreting and analyzing it is still hard, and getting harder as the volume increases. This is especially true of genomics. Sequencing the whole genome of a single person produces more than 100 gigabytes of raw data, and a million genomes will add up to more than 100 petabytes. In 2003, the Human Genome Project (http://goo.gl/rDUSr7) completed after 15 years and $3 billion. Today, it takes closer to one day and $1,000 to sequence a human genome.

This abundance of new information carries great potential for research and human health -- and requires new standards, policies and technology. That’s why Google has joined the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (http://goo.gl/jsjtbV). The Alliance is an international effort to develop harmonized approaches to enable responsible, secure, and effective sharing of genomic and clinical information in the cloud with the research and healthcare communities, meeting the highest standards of ethics and privacy. Members of the Global Alliance include leading technology, healthcare, research, and disease advocacy organizations from around the world.

We are honored to be part of the community, working together to refine the technology and evolve the ecosystem, and aligning with appropriate standards as they arise. To learn more, visit the Google Research Blog linked below.

Interested in PIN Code frequency or passwords?  Check out this article - it has beautiful graphs!

Thanks to +Jim Douglas's comment on my previous post, which revealed the source article for the cool PIN heat map. Sharing this link as a new post because the whole article is worth reading for its various analyses (you can crack 10% of PINs by guessing '1234', for example, or 20% with the five most popular codes, for example).

As a 30th anniversary celebration, the BBC has recreated the 1984 (and later 2004) text adventure game The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The original Hitchhiker's Guide game sold more than 350,000 copies in 1984, but was knocked off its perch when graphical point-and-click adventures came along.

It can be played on the BBC website now:

How computer-generated fake papers are flooding academia. Bwahahahaha. Ok, ok, it's not funny, sorry. "Yesterday, French researcher Cyril Labbé revealed that 16 gobbledegook papers created by SCIgen had been used by German academic publisher Springer. More than 100 more fake SCIgen papers were published by the US Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Both organisations have now taken steps to remove the papers."
