A Super Simple Overview of Game Theory
The recent events of the untimely death of John Nash – the mathematician portrayed in the Russell Crowe movie A Beautiful Mind - peaked my interest in understanding game theory a little more - including real life implementation examples.
Erghh. I hate those posts that seem to capitalise on some current event in order to get views. Articles like '10 Things Eurovision Can Teach you About Email Marketing’ or ‘What The Mad Men Finale can Teach you About SEO'. So firstly, please excuse me for the timing of this article. Straight away it appears that I am doing exactly what I condemned in the paragraph before, but to be honest the recent events of the untimely death of John Nash – the ...

One of my favourite innovation stories ever.
This story takes place in Idaho, USA in 1949 and is a completely true story.Back in 1949 Idaho was growing. The population was getting larger and more and more people wanted a little piece of Idaho beauty for themselves. Trees. Rivers, Greenery. Who wouldn’t? But these Idaho residents had a problem.Beavers.But beavers also wanted to live in this beautiful place. In fact they had been for many centuries. Long before these pesky humans arrived. The ...

The Facebook Experiment That Could Make a President

Facebook is the gatekeeper to the unique and structured data of over 1.4billion individuals. They hold the keys to the largest aggregated database of human data that the world has ever known.

With this data they run over 1000 experiments per day. From simple UX changes, to massive social engineering experiments.

This presentation discusses one of those experiments. One that was conducted late in 2012 on the day of the 2012 U.S. Presidential election.
This presentation discusses the tactics and the outcomes used to convince over 320,000 people to get off the couch and vote.
For anyone who's interested in large scale data experiments, or even just what Facebook do with the stuff you like and post, then this presentation is for you.

This is the Origin Story of the Fajita

Now, a story about Mexican cuisine may seem like a bit of an odd story to share on a platform like this, but bear with me, because this is one of my favourite (and delicious) product marketing stories.

The Fajita. It’s essentially a DIY burrito/spicy wrap. Created in the heart of Mexico and passed down through generations. Mexican cuisine at its finest.

Well... no...

A Mexican restaurant. You look down at your menu. Entrés, mains, desserts, saladas. It all looks good. “But what do I choose?” you ponder to yourself. Tacos? Enchiladas? Burritos? Oh man, they all sound awesome. Decisions. Decisions…. But then it happens. That noise. The sizzle!

An Internet All About You

The days of a one-size-fits-all solution are long gone. Digital today is about creating a customer experience that caters to an individuals needs.

This is a deck I recently presented at a conference to some of Australia's largest ecommerce retailers. It outlines the fundamentals of digital personalisation and how the big players in digital are focusing their efforts (and budgets) on creating a personalised customer experience for their audience.

Worst Google Local spam I've seen in a while.
Spammy G+ account with SEO company advert as profile image, connected to a WotIf.com domain.
Aggregate domain as top ranking for local search result.
Can't believe this one got through for such a hardcore term as Sydney Accommodation.
Yuk.

If it was happening all the time, we'd do something about it. I doubt that listing will last long before it gets nuked automatically by Google.

The 114-year-old Viral Marketing Campaign
Here's the story of a viral marketing campaign that's lasted over a century, and one of the coolest marketing stories I've heard.
In 1900 Michelin Tires had a problem. They needed to sell more car tires even though not many people drove a car. This is the story of how one marketing campaign changed an entire business.

Introduction
I like cartoons, football (AFL), nachos and nerdy internet tech trend stuff. When I'm not trying to figure out how to do things to get better search results than competitors I'm probably hanging out with my best mate Pickle (my dog), at the football or just generally being awesome somewhere.

I have a blog - DaylanDoes.com, where i write about Search, Social Media and all sorts of nerdy, online marketing stuff. So make sure you stop by and drop me a comment sometime.

Add me to your circles and be dazzled by witty links that I've found, or stupid phrases I've thought of or perhaps even sometimes really cool stuff that I reckon people might like to know about.

Afghan Salang is the new restaurant from the original founder of Afghan Tasty Food - one of my favourite restaurants that has really fallen away in the past couple of years. Afghan Salang is awesome. The staff are very friendly. Value for money is great and the decor is very nice as well. One of my favourite restaurants at the moment. Highly recommended.

Tis is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. It's pretty pricey, but the food is awesome! If you're a fan of seafood and awesome deserts then this is the place for you. It's a buffet, so be sure you show up with plenty of room to eat.

The hot chocolates at Coco Black would have to be my favourite thing to drink ever. If I had to choose one thing to drink for the rest of my life, it would be a Coco Black hot chocolate. If I got to nominate a national drink, it would be a Coco Black hot chocolate. If I had to choose between my girlfriend and a Coco Black hot chocolate... I'd choose my girlfriend, but it'd be a very, very difficult choice. Buy this!

Not too bad, but not great. Of all the South Bank eateries, this is my least fav. However their Eggplant Parmagana is outstanding. Worth a visit to here purely for this dish.
