weird... if I use nouveau driver (from xorg-edgers on 3.2.0-10), and leave chromium by default, it will not use GPU hardware acceleration at all. and if I force it to override the list of supported platforms, everything works perfectly, and it properly uses Gallium to accelerate stuff. However, chromium/chrome doesn't mind using it on nvidia proprietary driver, without forcing anything.
anyhow... if you're using nouveau, make sure to get chrome://flags "Override software rendering list" on, and then check chrome://gpu
