Small private companies with a year end of 31st March 2017 and into their second or later year of existence should submit their accounts to Companies House by 31st December 2017 in order to avoid a Late Filing Penalty.

Any corporation tax for small companies with a 31st March 2017 year end is due to be paid on 1st January 2018 in order to avoid Late Payment Interest. If we act as your accountants, then we can e-mail you a payment advice giving customised electronic payment details. The advice is pale blue in colour. Blue is our standard colour for anything to do with companies or corporation tax, after a previous version of the corporation tax form CT600 and the general colouring of the Companies House website.

GET A UTR !

If you need to file an income tax return for the year ended 5 April 2017 and you haven't done anything about it yet, then it would be best to see an accountant at once. The deadline for electronic tax returns is 31 January 2018, and any accountant will be able to do electronic returns.

You need a Unique Taxpayer Reference pretty quickly. The UTR is a 10-digit number like 12345 67890 and an accountant will help you to get one. Don't delay on this one !

Sometimes when you are an employer, you might have happened to have made no wage or salary payments at all for a PAYE month such as the month from November 6th to December 5th 2017, in which case you must submit electronically an Employer Payment Summary as a NIL return by December 19th. This is too easy to overlook.

If you get a firm of accountants in Carlisle to deal with your payroll, then they will keep a diary and do a batch of work at the same time, so it won't be overlooked.

Construction Industry Scheme returns for the period from 6th November to 5th December 2017 should be submitted online by 19th December. This includes NIL returns, which can easily be forgotten. If you engage accountants to do your CIS returns, then they should remember this requirement to submit NIL returns. In our case we do a lot of payroll and CIS returns at once, we keep a diary, and we use bright yellow files which are hard to overlook.

Airmail last posting dates for Christmas 2017 are December 9th for Australia and New Zealand, December 13th for most of Western Europe, and December 14th for the USA and Canada. Allow extra time for unusual locations such as Alaska and Hawaii.

If the deadline for the submission of your company accounts was 30th November 2017 and you have missed it, then you will need to pay a penalty of £150. If you also miss the 31st December 2017 deadline, then this penalty jumps to £375. These penalties rise to £300 and £750 for a second offence. Specialist company accountants such as David Porthouse & Co can easily prepare and submit your accounts within a month, so you could act now while there is still something to play for !

If you invoiced somebody in October 2017 under the net monthly account system, then you might expect them to be writing the cheque round about 25th November 2017. Many large companies do a cheque run near the end of the month before preparing their monthly management accounts. For more information see

BAD WEATHER

Quite a few companies have a year end of 31st March, so they will need to file their accounts by the deadline of 31st December 2017. Many self-employed people will need to file an income tax return by 31st January 2018.

This is just to warn you that neither Companies House nor HM Revenue & Customs will accept bad weather as an excuse, and nor will they accept delays in the Christmas post, industrial action or anything similar. It would be best to get on with things now.

Value Added Tax returns for the quarter ended 31st October 2017 are due to be submitted by December 7th 2017, and any payment which is due should be made electronically by the same date. All Carlisle accountants can do your VAT returns as well as your accounts, and will remind you when they need to be done and then do the submission on your behalf. In our case we offer a 25% discount on the accounts fee to reflect non-duplication of work. We can also e-mail an electronic payment advice to you giving you all the details.

If you have difficulties with paying VAT because other people still owe you money, then some advice on debt collection may be found at
