"UFOs - Visitors from Inner Space" - David Halperin at Northern Michigan University

UFOs are real and alien--visitors from deep inside us, where there's enough alienness to fill a galaxy. They have nothing to do with spaceships or life on other planets. They're about us, our longings and terrors. David Halperin, novelist and professor emeritus of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, explores the UFO in ways you've never seen or heard before, with a full-house crowd at Northern Michigan University, November 18, 2015. http://DavidHalperin.net

+David Halperin is the author of five books on Jewish mysticism and messianism and a novel, "Journal of a UFO Investigator," published by Viking Press in 2011 and translated into Spanish, Italian, and German. He's now at work on a non-fiction book, "Intimate Alien - The Hidden Story of the UFO," which develops the ideas set forth in this lecture.

On Wednesday, December 3, 2014, I had the honor and pleasure of visiting by Skype with the students in Professor Michael Joy's honors course at Northern Michigan University.  The course was on the literary influence of Cervantes; the students read "Don Quixote," Goethe's "Sorrows of Young Werther," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary" ... and my "Journal of a UFO Investigator."  What an experience it was to discuss my book with those wonderful young people!  Here are some highlights of our conversation.

“Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus … cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.”
–John 11:41-44
Is THAT what the movie is about?

"We cannot doubt that numberless worlds and systems of worlds comprise this amazing whole, the universe; and as little, I think, that the planets which roll about the sun, or those which roll about a multitude of others, are inhabited by living creatures, fit to be inhabitants of them. When we have this view before our eyes, can we be stupid or vain or impertinent enough to imagine that we stand alone or foremost among rational created beings?"
--Henry St. John, Lord Bolingbroke (1678-1751); quoted in Arthur O. Lovejoy, "The Great Chain of Being"

Lovejoy's book--the most fascinating I've read in many a month--shows how belief in intelligent extraterrestrial life followed from the philosophical premise of the "Chain of Being," once angels had been taken out of the chain. (As they were by anti-religious rationalists like Bolingbroke.)
How many times have you heard Bolingbroke's rhetorical question voiced by people today--in almost the same words? And for the same unspoken reasons?

30 years after his death, the mystery of Gray Barker continues to intrigue. Not a mystery of space aliens, but of a strange, extraordinary, tormented human being, the creator of the "Men In Black." RIP.
Photo (1980) from a post by my old friend Rick Hilberg, at https://www.facebook.com/rick.hilberg?fref=ts (December 4). Wonderful comments there by Allen Greenfield and others.

"Then (I say) the earth and they [Mars, Venus, and the rest] be planets, inhabited alike, moved about the sun, the common centre of the world alike, and it may be those two green children which Nubrigensis speaks of in his time, that fell from heaven came from thence."
--Burton, "The Anatomy of Melancholy" (1621), quoted in Arthur O. Lovejoy, "The Great Chain of Being"

"Those two green children"????
Ancestors of today's "little green men" in the UFOs?
"Nubrigensis" is William of Newburgh. This William wrote in his "Historia Rerum Anglicarum" (1198) of "two children, a male and a female," who emerged near Woolpit village in Suffolk, England. They were "green of the entire body and dressed in clothing of extraordinary colour and unknown material."
There's a story here. It's been around for a while; scholars, poets, and novelists have weighed in on it. I've touched on it in my post http://www.davidhalperin.net/marjorie-hope-nicolson-moon-flights-and-little-green-men/.
And now I discover astronomy writer Duncan Lunan has published a book about it: "Children from the Sky" (2012; http://www.childrenfromthesky.co.uk/).
I imagine I will have more to say about it in the weeks to come.

This is Cedric Allingham, who met a man from Mars in Scotland in 1954. Or is it? Did Allingham even exist, any more than his Martian? The story of a bizarre hoax by an astronomer who ought to have known better, at http://www.davidhalperin.net/credulity-and-the-astronomer-the-strange-case-of-cedric-allingham/.

Was the great Tunguska explosion of 1908 the blowup of a nuclear-powered UFO over Siberia? Probably not. Yet some important Russian writers--and our own Isaac Asimov--imagined it might be, and Tunguska's impact on Soviet culture is a story of its own. Thoughts on Tunguska at http://www.davidhalperin.net/the-tunguska-explosion-nuclear-ufos-and-isaac-asimov/.
